As a newbie I've been on CPAP since August 15, with bits of the usual frustration over settings and masks, etc., along the way. Is it a "typical" experience of folks when adjusting as newbies to not sleep for very long, at least at first, when on CPAP? The first few weeks I almost never slept beyond 4 hours at a time before fully awakening and then having to go back to sleep after a bathroom break, etc. Recently it seems to be gradually climbing to 5 or 5 1/2 hours. Before CPAP I could sleep for 7 to 8 hours without fully awakening.
How common is this experience among newbies? If it is pretty common, how long can it take to "climb" to 7 or 8 hours of sleep at a time?
I'm not so sure there's anything specific that's waking me up, and of course I'll bring this up with my doctor. But for now I'm wondering if this might just be part of the typical adjustment process, and would appreciate hearing from others. Thanks...

Re: Is it "typical" to sleep less at first w/CPAP?
It's a fairly common thing among newbies.
Sometimes we just wake up and don't know why. I think part of it is the brain and body just not used to having all this "stuff" attached to us. Let's face it...it isn't normal to have an alien stuck on our faces blowing air up or nose or into our mouth.
I think that the brain just takes a while to get used to things. For a while the brain thinks that its job is to wake you up and say "Hey dude, did you know you have an alien stuck on your face blowing air up your nose?"
How long does it take to get back to sleeping our normal hours of sleep? It takes as long as it takes. There's no set amount of time because everyone is different. Some people have found that once they are getting effective cpap therapy that they simply don't need to sleep as long as they did prior to starting cpap therapy because the quality of sleep now is so much better.
For me....it was a gradual process and started with getting about 4 to 5 hours for the first couple of months then the hours of sleep gradually started increasing. I think it took probably 6 months to work up over 6 hours of sleep. I still rarely get 8 hours but I average probably 7 to 7 1/2 hours. Part of the reason I don't get more hours of sleep is related to issues unrelated to sleep apnea though. My back might hurt or the animals that own me might wake me up for some reason.
