Can you help translate SleepyHead into another language?

Bonjour,

I'm starting to get SleepyHead ready so it can be translated for non-English speaking users.. only after having realized how small a minority English only speakers like me are! Sorry for taking so long to work that out!

Quite a few people have asked me before about translating, and I was too foggy a mess to work it out. It turns out it was way easier than I thought. Thanks to Bram for showing me the way.

If you have got the time, and are reasonably fluent with the medical terms used in SleepyHead in both English and your native language, and want to help out with translating, please let me know. If you've asked about it already, please remind me.

The tool used for translation work is a free app called QtLinguist, and it's fairly straightforward to use. No programming involved, but you'll still need to know how to find your way around your computer. You will need the SleepyHead source code to get at the translation templates for your language (which I first need to create for each new supported language), and see comments and which might help figure out context. (a GIT client to download SleepyHead's source code from SourceForge is also needed.)

QtLinguist can be downloaded from here http://qt-apps.org/content/show.php/Qt+ ... tent=89360 although I'm not sure that's the latest version.

If you've helped translate apps before I'd very much like to hear from you, because I'm still very new to this whole process.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing SleepyHead become multi-lingual!

I doubt it that it would be easy to translate into Hebrew and Arabic which are written from right to left.

Layout direction is switchable in Qt, however I'm sure there will be plenty of headaches with these kind of languages.

My graphing code is certainly gonna need some tweaking for those cases, but that can be done in the text rendering functions.

Being multi-linguistically challenged, I'm a little worried about dealing with different numbering systems.. cross that bridge when I come to it I guess :/

I'll see if I can de-procrastinate myself enough to write up some getting started docs

I'm not a native Germa speaker but here is a first cut. I don't know if I have all the relevant terms and I won't be at all offended if the list is added to or corrected in order to get it right.

For everyone who is interested: In the Netherlands we are well on our way to translate SleepyHead into Dutch. I will present the first results next week during our "UitleesMarkt" of the Apneuvereniging.
The program QT Linguïst is a great help and my friend Bram Prosman even sent a proposal to JediMark, which was acceptable. Not?

I am impressed.
I spent over 30 years beating software into multilingual states and it is not easy. What takes 6 characters in English can take 6 words in French (and each of the 3 human translators will come up with the 6 different words they consider most valid!) and NO you don't want to support a different version for each language! That was every non software supervisors first suggestion "to save money".

I'm trying to reduce a lot of the string double-ups to lessen the workload.. I hope these changes don't mess your efforts up too much.
Running the "lupdate" command refreshes the templates from the source code.

Thanks for reminding me about that.. I've got to put some thought into how best to store that :/

Application string translations are relatively easy and handled by QtLinguist, but then there is stuff like the Users Guide in the Wiki...

Apart from few files in the docs directory in SleepyHead sourcecode, most of the rest of the docs is in the online wiki.

I'm guessing I just need add the language code after the filenames/URLs.. eg: index_de.html

I'm retired, so very glad I have something usefull to do. And I get help from an official Dutch-English translator/interruptor.

Things are moving along nicely.. getting a lot done this past couple of weeks in preparation for the next SleepyHead update.

SleepyHead's Translation loader is working now in the source code.

In the next build (or right now if you build from source ), you will be able to select languages from a drop down on first run, and change it later at will from the Help menu. Provided some translations are complete of course.

Languages are plugins, so it will be possible to add or update support for a language simply by dropping the file in the Translations folder. (The auto-updater will eventually handle all of that)

All I need now to make this work is the language templates to be worked on by willing translators using QtLinguist tool mentioned in the first post of this thread..

The best way to get the language templates is to download SleepyHead's source code with a GIT client, then you will find the templates are located in the "Translations" folder

But using GIT to download the source allows you to stay up to date much easier.

Linux users will find GIT in their distro's software repository.

Mac Users can either get GIT through MacPorts or in the Command Line tools component of Xcode. (XCode is free, however it is quite a large download, but having it is one of the components needed to build SleepyHead from source)

I have started with the translation into Swedish now. Is a little busy so it may take a while, a few days or a few weeks. I'm doing the best I can. It was a cinch to translate.

There is so much need and so much ignorance in Sweden to decipher the data in cpap machines. I'm trying to educate Sweden in sleep quality
