A trick to get back to sleep in the morning

Post by sleepy1235 » Sat Sep 07, 2013 6:09 pm

I had some success with this technique to put myself to sleep in the morning when I really needed to get some additional sleep. It also works for going to sleep.

I get a space heater that is temperature programmable and heat up the room. When the environment is warm I just drop off to sleep. I generally tend to get drowsy in warm environment. When I first tried it I went back to sleep at 7:00 am and woke up at 1pm and remembered what it was like not to be sleepy.

I also use electric blankets in conjunction, but you probably could do it without them.

I keep the rest of the living space fairly cool, like the thermostat down to 60. Besides saving the energy which I am going to be using on my room, I can also cool down the bedroom quickly by opening the door.

Be careful how warm you set your space heater. It may not seem warm when you first set it, but over time your room will warm up some, and you will be sweating like crazy.

You need to note exactly what temperature works for you. You might turn the space heater on before you go to bed and adjust accordingly.

Buy about three space heaters for the winter. They don't last long when used day after day and usually the fan fails.

This just works for me. I am not a doctor and you try it at your own risk. Especially be careful about fire risk.

Luckily, heat does not make me sleepy.
Our office thermostat was set a bit too low for my knee, and I used a small oil-filled radiator to keep the pain away.

An interesting physiological phenomena regarding sleep is a drop in body temperature during the interval as you fall asleep.
So it is understandable that getting warm leads to sleepiness for some people.
Hot showers just beore bed time sometimes works because it fools the body into 'thinking' that sleep is coming.

Doesn't work for everybody but enough of the time to try it in case you have difficulty falling asleep. Not a cure for severe insomnia though - sorry about that.

I can't sleep unless the room is cold, though I like to be warm under the covers. I wake up with night swears, and can't get back to sleep until I've cooled off.
