sleep too much...

Post by oak » Sun Sep 01, 2013 1:32 pm

Hi, I am into CPAP two months and things are going well. My only issue at the moment is that I am still taking a long time to get to sleep (about 1 hour now vs. two hours previously) and I sleep too much (9 hours). I am working on the "getting to sleep" problem and have reduced some medications with my docs ok, but I am starting a new job soon and I can't be getting up at 9 AM anymore. Is it possible that I am just still sleeping more due to sleep debt and if so, is there hope that I will need less sleep in the future? I guess I am asking if this is common at the start of CPAP. Any assistance is welcome...

Yes it is common, especially around the time you are now (some people do it earlier depending on adjustment). Your mind has adjusted to the fact it can safely let you sleep and is doing catch up. I would suggest slowly setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier every few days until you are at the time you want to be.

For 6 weeks, after the first 3 weeks, I slept like the dead for 9-10 hours, not moving at all. That let up and now I can do with 7.5 hours easily.

Yep. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
Your body is (probably) enjoying good sleep and the benefits. If you can adjust your bedtime, you may be able to have the best of both worlds.

Hang in there.

Heck, I STILL enjoy my sleep.

Looking back through some of my "MyEncore" reports, my first year (I started in mid-May of 2005) averaged about 6.5 hours per night. My first months were in the low 5's. I had lots of work demands and getting lengthy, quality sleep was tough.
My average for 2006 was 7.1 hrs.
2007 was 7.5 hrs.
2008 was 7.5.
2009 was back to 7.1 (I retired mid-2009).
2010 was 7.6.
2011 was 8.2. 2012 was 8.4.
So far this year is 8.5.

Looking back through those yearly reports, I see numbers of nights over 10 and some close to 12 hours. When I was working, they would be on the weekends when I'd play "catch-up". Now, I don't see them very often, but my nightly hours are a little longer. Sleeping, breathing and dreaming can be like drugs......you can get hooked on them.
