ComfortLite 2

Post by Morpheus » Sat May 13, 2006 8:43 pm

After reading the positive and interesting reviews of the ComfortLite 2 mask here, I decided to give it a try. It fits comfortably and easily and lives up to the enthusiastic things people have said about it, with just one problem. It totally disables the bipap functions of my Goodknight 425 - rise time, sensitivity, periodicity are all irrelevant. It operates exactly the same way it does when I remove the mask and leave the machine on - a brief surge of air about every fifteen seconds. Only I'm wearing it. Not a good experience.

I'll be calling Respironics on Monday to see if they have any advice, but in the meantime would appreciate any counsel or insight anyone here has. For me, it's back to the Breeze, which at least remains compatible.

Morpheus, I think I know what your problem is. The reason your machine operates just like it does when you have removed the mask, is because that is what is happening. You probably have a large leak in the mask somewhere.

Several folks wrote about finding significant leaks in the tubing of the mask. I expected to find that with mine, but fortunately have had no leaks.

You should be able to find the leak easily by feeling around all the plumbing in the mask (with the machine hooked up). You might also want to make sure you don't have leaks somewhere else in your setup if you don't find a leak at the mask.

If you can't fix the leak, then return the mask for a replacement. Respironics has made CL2 masks without leaks. I know because I have one of them.

Regards,
Bill

Morpheus, if you do a forum search for "plumbers tape", you will find several posts regarding fixes for CL2 leaks.

I got a CL2 and used it first night okay with the nasal cushion and the hose not raised so last night I got industrious and tried to hook the hose up over my head and cflex wasn't working on the machine - it had worked the night before with the hose down - I took the hose down and cflex worked - but I just gave up and put the swift back on

I also looked at the nasal pillows earlier in evening with the machine going - both sizes I got with it before going back to the nasal cushion last night - found it hard to get it all lined up since I want them higher than the highest setting the dial allows but when I got good seal at the nose it LEAKED at this interface where the soft part doesn't set quite right into the hard plastic interface just below where you screw it only the rest of the mask so didn't persue using them - not sure paper first aid tape or teflon tape is going to be a fix when it pulls out as much as it did - maybe duct tape on outside

Respironics

Well, that was interesting, and not pleasant. I talked to Respironics' customer service this morning, and they say this mask is tested only with Respironics machines, and, basically, I am out of luck. (The mask doesn't leak.) They did not offer any further assistance or advice on troubleshooting. They would not connect me to anyone who might offer further advice.

The bottom line with a warning that ought to be made clear throughout all discussions of this mask and its sales on cpap.com: Use ComfortLite 2 only with Respironics machines. Other bipaps especially may prove to be, like mine, incompatible.

Sad to say, but you are not viewed as a customer by Respironics. Their customers are physicians and the evil DME's If you go back through the archives you will find a few customer service horror stories. I don't have direct experience, but my opinion based on the stories is that Respironics is the worst of the CPAP companies when it comes to customer service.

IMHO, all the more reason to form a Respironics user group. The company needs more direct involvement with the end-users for their products.
