Maybe he wants to be popular with the other inmates at the prison and figures they will stand behind him in his decision.

Would he have to go to a woman's prison and become a lesbian?

I immediately thought about Orange is the New Black when I heard about the Bradley/Chelsea Manning case today.

On that Netflix Series show, one character is a transgender male to female who hasn't made the complete transition yet (she still has her male parts) but is able to be in a federal women's prison. (I didn't read the book, but I think in the interviews I heard on NPR this character was not a real inmate in the non-fiction book).

My first thought was whether this guy got the idea from the show, since there's been no indication before that he was transgender until now. OTOH, in the military, there's really no safe way to come out to people as transgender right now, so maybe it's legit. Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt, especially one facing a prison sentence because coming out like that and still having to go to a men's prison (Leavenworth) would be double jeopardy for sure.

If Bradley or Chelsea Manning wants a sex change, I am all for it. He just needs to come up with the money to pay for it. I feel no desire to pay for any portion of it. If it is too hard to earn the money to have it done in prison, he should have thought about that before he decided to become a traitor. And no, it should not be paid for by the Un-affordable care act either. He should just be glad he will have a cot and meals on the taxpayer for the next 35 years.

I never saw that movie. I am shocked at my own ignorance.

He has always presented him/her self as trans gender. This is nothing new.

My speculation is the guy's just running s*** ass scared about being molested, abused, and maybe even killed by other inmates who want to see him suffer for betraying his country. Remember, those other inmates are military guys who may still hate our enemies, despite the fact they're in the cooler, and so don't cotton to anyone betraying this country.

Manning probably figures women inmates would be more sympathetic toward him and so he would be safer in a women's prison.

The film? Actually, no, not until now. I wouldn't even know it existed if you hadn't mentioned it, and if Google weren't around to fill me in. And I still only know the title and it was a 1983 movie, about prison life.

When it comes to movies I'm seriously culturally challenged. I probably haven't watched 2 dozen movies in my 69 year lifetime, on TV, DVD, VHS, or in the theater. And I'm sure a fourth of those were a waste of time.
