Does DME have to change a setting to get S9 data?

Post by Jeannh » Wed Aug 21, 2013 7:02 pm

I anticipate pushback from my doc when I ask for both a very specific Rx AND a Res Med (Apria contracts with Respironics, as does his sleep lab). Also, he wants to prescribe a straight CPAP. Maybe I need a new doc.

Anyway, If I don't have to do anything to enable accessible data when I see him except get an S9 Auto, I'd rather not add it to the conversation.

Can the DME actually "lock me out of the data" on an S9 Auto?
Many thanks for your expertise!

Manuals can be found on line to control everything as long as you get a resmed which does not have "Escape" in the name or is actually got Autoset in the name.

If you have an S9 Autoset, you just have to set Sleep Quality to On to get data. (Make sure it's not the Escape Auto as mentioned above - that model offers little data).

Is there a particular reason you're set on the S9 vs. the Respironics? There's not a lot of practical difference between them. Pugsy has tried both and says it's a matter of preference.

Apria (who I have to use) only dispenses used Repironics machines, which creeps me out. ResMeds are always new. Also, I like the backlit display on the ResMed. Not worth a fight?

I prefer using the LCD display, seldom firing up the software (OK, I'm lazy)
For that reason, I like the color display on the Re$med S9 Autoset.
The machine is also incredibly quiet. {mine doesn't "hoot"}

You could make an argument based on the decibel levels. I went ResMed based on the lower noise level when I was buying. I wanted my wife happy too.

I couldn't find a decibel rating on the Philips website for the Series 60 machines (cpap.com lists it as "less than 30 dBA"), but Philips claims their machine is quieter than the S9 Autoset: http://www.healthcare.philips.com/us_en ... uction.wpd

Resmed lists the S9 Autoset level as 24 dBA (plus or minus 2 dBA)...

All of this to say that with a possible spread of 3 to 4 dBA difference, it doesn't seem like it would be noticeable, unless you have dog hearing...

I had an S8 elite, now I have a resperonics APAP. The sound level is no different. The EPR (or whatever) when it was set to 3 annoyed me more in the fact that there was a change in the sound level (minute).

Which did you like better, ResMed or your Respironics, and why?

Thanks!

I have used both brands. I currently use a Resmed S9 VPAP Auto, but I also have the comparable Philips Respironics System One Bipap Auto (model 750) and a Resmed S9 Autoset. I don't really notice a comfort difference between the brands, other than that the 750 series PR System One Bipap does not have the heated hose option (the new 60 series models offer that option). And a heated hose is really nice to have in the winter months, so I would definitely opt for the heated hose setup, whichever brand of cpap you end up with.

So, no difference comfort-wise, or sound-wise as far as I can tell (one is not louder than the other to my ears). For some reason, my AHI was always slightly better on the Resmed machines, but I'm not sure that is attributable to anything specific, except that it has been mentioned here that some people respond slightly better to the algorithm of one brand vs the other.

While the Mrs. has very good hearing, she certainly is no dog. She puts up with me too.

I got a great deal on the Resperonics. Also I have an issue with Resmed's shipping policies.

Can you share what it is?
