HELP! Still having Humidifier troubles!

Post by 123.Shawn T.W. » Sun Aug 18, 2013 12:40 pm

I have a PR S1 50 Series ... a couple of weeks ago my humidifier stopped working ... I'm a long distance truck driver ... I nice lady here on the board sent me one she had only used for a week ... I'm home now, and still having troubles!

From two weeks ago when my humidifier troubles started ... viewtopic/t91347/Help-Anybody-have-a-ex ... ifier.html

I believe that the blower unit is not telling the humidifier to work ... I fully believe that the second humidifier is fine, and in working order ... I will be getting a free humidifier from the DME tomorrow, just because they had already promised it to me, and it's free! I don't know how many hours of use it has on it, so I decided that it would be worth it to have a back up, so I agreed to buy the one from a member here.

Here is what it is doing (or not doing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxJMhXsH5vc

A couple of questions ...

1. When I first turn on my machine, the humidity number lights up, it goes off in less than a minute, it is than dark for the rest of the night, unless I turn it off and back on ... I have it in my head that it use to stay on the whole night ... Doesn't the lighted number stay on all night on a normal working machine?

2. According to the owners manual ... the flashing humidifier icon which flashes for ten minutes, indicates a faulty humidifier, doesn't it seem that is not the case here?

3. I only get the flashing light if/when I change the humidifier setting, even if I unplug it ... it does not trigger it, seems strange, as the when I first discovered this, it would flash if power was disconnected, seems weird, huh?

4. Any idea if there is a way to "reset" the machine software, kinda like a "re-boot"?

The cpap does get bounced around quite abit ... as it rides in my semi truck, probably about 140,000 miles on it, 2458.8 total blower hours on machine. Here is a video of my setup in the truck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi0SJN2bqHk

What is strange is ... one night it seemed to work, as the chamber was empty the next morning, as mentioned in the other thread ...

Step One
Yes the humidity number lights up, it goes off in less than a minute is normal. My humidity icon stays lit.
Step two
the flashing humidifier Icon does say that there is a fault for the humidifier operation somewhere.

Have you try to clean the electrical contacts on the blower and the humidifier where the two connects with each other?
Since you said that it works one time sounds more or a electrical contact issue.

Suggestion - get a cooler and create an inner box with foam to keep your machine alive while driving.

Julie, I don't understand ... do you mean to insulate it from temperatures? or shock?

My blower unit is putting out a steady 3.14 volts at it's contacts on the blower unit.

There is little to no shock, bouncing, yes ... I have air suspension on the truck, and then air bags under the sleeper itself ... then the cpap is on a layer of foam ...

Here are some pictures of the contacts ...

I have not tried to clean them, they look like new ...

Even if the contacts look clean it still could be a issue. I clean all of my audio and video connections almost twice a year since a thin layer of film can develop> I usually use DeoxIT on a Q-tip to clean contacts and then use a Jewell screwdriver to spread out the male contacts just a bit. I am not saying that this would work but something I can do to rule out connection issues in the plug especially you said that it works intermittently.

I'm only getting 3.15 volts at the output contacts from the blower ... I think that is the problem ...

This morning I rolled over and noticed the clock read 3:58 and while I was looking at it, my machine beeped once and shut off, then since it is set for "auto on" it re-started, and the humidifier light started blinking! Mt clock did not blink, and my wife's S9 was still going, so no power interruption.

I think my machine is dying, I'm looking for another ... I bought it second hand, with 29 hours on it ... but it is three years old, and out of warrantee ...

3.15 voltage does seems to be low but I have not measure mine to see what voltage level is at the blower to humidifier plug. One last thing you can check is the power brick output and see if it still gives the full 12v DC

Brick puts out 12.32 vdc ... Power cord from my truck puts out 12.86vdc ...

I have an apt with my DME scheduled in about 2 hours ... They are gonna look at it ... I have a new prescription for a new machine too ...

Correct ... Though the lighted signal on the blower unit says it the humidifier, according to the manual ...

Yes I have ins, but they require me to rent ... And I haven't met my deductible yet, and second wind has one much cheaper!

Is just that the blower unit detected a fault which happens to be with the humidifier control in the blower unit. I had the same problem with my pervious Sandman Auto. Also it seems that the ResMed S9 series also have the humidifier control in the blower unit as well. I was helping the OP to rule out the humidifier and the power supply being the issue. On the old ResMed and Respironics CPAPs the humidifier control is on the humidifier itself. I also brought a unit on Secondwind myself.

First I want to make a correction ... I thought in the other thread that the humidifier worked one night, as the chamber was empty ... however on further observation ... I think I was wrong ... The first night I used it, and noticed that it did not work, the chamber was still full ... and I incorrectly assumed that I really did not gain any humidification using it in "Passover mode", however San Diego is a bit more humid than I'm use to ... and after using it without heat, after a few nights ... the tank was empty ... Since I got home here in AZ I was using about 25% per night without the heater working, and normally it is 80+% (with the heater working)

Last night in 1.5 hours it shut off three times! I shut it off, and took off my mask, and tried to sleep! about 02:00 I thought ... what if I disconnect the humidifier from the blower unit? So I got up and did that ... ran steady for over three hours ... but what a dry mouth!

I think I will take it apart, and remove the wire connector from the humidifier ... so atleast I can have Passover humidification, until I get my new machine next week ( I need to leave today, and will be back next week)
