power supply for camping trip
power supply for camping trip
I will be going on a camping trip and will need a power supply. I looked into the batter packs and they are costly. Does any one know if you can rent them? Should I go thru my DME for that.
Re: power supply for camping trip
What do you mean by camping? RV with hookups? Tent in campground you drive to? Backpack? It makes a big difference on recommendations
It appears you're using a resmed S9. These use 24 vdc rather than 12 vdc so you can't run direct with most portable power supply type batteries which are 12vdc. Because of this you'll need to either use an inverter, or buy a ResMed DC power cord which has a power converter build in. They are somewhat pricey getting up towards the $100 range.

Have you done a search on the forum yet? This has been discussed ad infinitum, almost! Search for camping, battery, and battery backup. Just about any question you can come up with has been discussed.bevjok wrote:I will be going on a camping trip and will need a power supply. I looked into the batter packs and they are costly. No idea about renting. But what you need may be available for rent, but you need to narrow down your requirements as asked above.

Thank you - will be in a motor home with generator but told generator will not run all night. Thanks for the input - I will research further on line.

This is all new and confusing to me as I have only been on the cpap since April. Thanks for input.

Re: power supply for camping trip
Since you'll be in an RV, things should be a lot easier. You probably won't have to buy a battery, as the RV will have a 12vdc battery system to keep things going when not hooked up. Now the question will be whether or not the motorhome has an inverter, and if not whether it has a DC outlet close to where you'll be sleeping. If it has an inverter, you'll be able to plug your can plug the cpap into an ac outlet powered by the inverter just like at home. It will convert battery power to AC for you. I don't recommend running the humidifier heater though as it will take quite a bit more power and you don't want to put to much demand on the batteries.bevjok wrote:Thank you - will be in a motor home with generator but told generator will not run all night. If the motorhome doesn't have an inverter, the next best option is plugging in to a DC outlet. You'll need a special power cord to do this which will run just slightly less than a hundred bucks, and plugs into a cigarette lighter style outlet. The other way to use a cigarette lighter type plug would be to buy a cheap inverter of 150 to 200 watts. You can pick one up at places like walmart for well under $30, and luckily the S9 series machines work okay with the cheap modified sine wave type inverters. Again, you won't want to try and run the humidifier heater.
Good luck. I tend to spend at least 45 days a year, often more in my camp trailer, most of it off the beaten path without hookups. I've actually built a secondary battery system into my trailer so that the cpap has it's own separate power supply just in case something like the grandkids run down the main batteries.

Bevjok-did you go camping?? Let us know-
We love camping and now my husband is a CPAP as well-I use a concentrator for low oxygen so that sucks-No Burning Man for us...LOL
Anyway, we are trying to figure it out as well-camping is very easy if you have electrical hookup…you can even run a heavy duty extension cord to the tent if you must be in one
I also saw just recently these incredible looking solar panel generators for camping. Not sure how it works but they looked incredible. (and expensive)

Re: power supply for camping trip
On a tent camping trip this year, I used a ~120amp deep cycle battery with a power inverter. You can get a deep cycle battery at Costco, and most places like Walmart sell inverters. I got mine at Harbor Freight. I used it 3 nights with a low setting on my humidifier, slept about 8 hours each night, didn't run the battery out. If you are going to store battery, you need to buy a battery Charger/Tender until the next time you camp. You probably want a Battery box too. You may know someone who can lend you these items?
As said, your motor home should have outlets that work like regular outlets. At least my friend's travel trailer worked that way, (they were hooked up to deep cycle batteries) I just plugged into an outlet near where I was sleeping.
Kind of a hassle, but not really.

You can use this with a deep cycle battery. This is what I use at home for power outages. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/DC-Con ... hines.html
