(I posted this under this PLMD poll too. Forgive me.)
My battle with PLMD has been over the last 6 years (correlated with menopause), but treated (as was my insomnia) with benzodiazepines for years. My sleep study showed I was not being awaken by the PLMD, but rather by the mild OSA, but that was that night and is certainly not true now. I am off all benzodiazepines and using a CPAP since 6/1 without problems. But good sleep is still quite elusive and PLMD has come back with a vengeance since 8/1 (correlates with getting off all benzos, but I had been titrating for weeks without disruptive PLMD, so I thought maybe I was out of the woods). My mother had PLMD. I have had a history of iron deficiency, but my last test had me at 150 (although I wonder because I am a now a vegetarian and when I got that number six months ago, I was taking the max of iron supplements and eating lots of meat). Maybe this was mentioned somewhere, but docs don't like ordering ferretin levels because it is an expensive test (and somehow insurance penalizes them--something I have never understood how that works). I can't answer the poll yet because the sleep doc thought--from my sleep study--that I was asymptomatic because PLMD was not correlated with my awakenings. But now I have gone back to him so we will see. I have asked to try a TENS.
One thing I didn't see mentioned was magnesium at night before bed. It didn't help me (made me nervous), but seems to help a lot of people.
Questions: Has anyone tried (the below is in the horribly expensive "natural" LegCalm product):
Ruscus acluteatus
This is also known as Butcher’s Broom and is used extensively in Europe to improve circulation and relieve the pain and discomfort associated with restless leg syndrome. Also useful in treatment of constipation and water retention, circulatory disorders including hemorrhoids and varicose veins and as a bladder and kidney tonic.
Aesculus hippocastum (Horse Chestnut)
This helps promote healthy blood circulation throughout the body, including the legs and can relieve Periodic Limb Movement and RLS by keeping the blood flowing smoothly even during rest and sleep.
Also, I have a bad attitude about not sleeping well and since I am beginning to think it is my destiny, I am wondering if anyone has suggestions about developing a more positive attitude about it? Since I am retired I do not have the pressure of having to perform, etc. Is there a good book about "living with insomnia" or some collection of stories about famous insomniacs?
