New to cpap talk, ?? for a newbie

Post by nay2120 » Thu Aug 08, 2013 9:50 am

Hello, My name is Renee.
I was recently diagnosed with profound sleep apnea. I had an event 68 times per hour, one lasting for 38 seconds.
I have received my machine. I'm on a biflex setting with 14/10.

I did snore loudly before, but didn't have any other symptom. I'm not tired during day, feel rested when I wake up, don't fall asleep watching tv or reading, etc.... I was totally surprised that I have sleep apnea.
I have been using my machine for only about 5 days. The 1st night was the hardest, but its getting easier. I still have trouble falling asleep, but I'm fine once I do.

My question for everyone, I am actually feeling more tired now than before!! I'm exhaused during the day now... I didn't feel this way before. I am wondering if this is normal & I just need a little more patience for myself to get used to it, or if I should call my dr.

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome to the forum.

Please read my response to another user in this thread.

It saves me having to type most of the stuff all over again. I am a bit lazy.

How is your sleep quality? How many hours of actual sleep? How long does it take you to get to sleep? Wake up often during the night?

Welcome Renee,
I also was totally shocked when I was told I have sleep apnea too. I had a quiet snore but only on my back according to my husband and I had problems falling asleep but wasn't feeling overly tired at all. In fact I thought I was the healthy one until a new doctor sent me for a sleep test.
That said, I also felt worse after starting therapy. Since I've only been using CPAP for about 4 months, I can only tell you that for me it has taken a lot of patience and determination. It's very frustrating when the therapy that is going to save you future health problems exhausts you while you try to sleep.

The fact that you didn't feel bad or exhausted before could be why you feel so tired now. You are trying to learn to sleep with a face sucking monster (FFM) that gets between you and your pillow, interfering with the comfort you were used to. I'd think it's hard to feel "better" this soon when you weren't feeling tired before therapy and are still in adjustment phase all night. It sounds like you are really doing well compared to many tho! I couldn't make 3 hrs in a FFM! I'm really impressed you are tolerating it so well in 5 days! There are many in ths group who didn't feel "better" right away, and even more who have had major issues adjusting, esp to FFM. Give it some more time, hang in there, and let us know how you are doing as you go along!
