Getting my New S9 Autoset Tomorrow!

My insurance approved the new machine and I will be picking it up tomorrow morning. I am quite excited but a little nervous about transitioning to a new APAP. I have been using my M-Series APAP for 5 years and I am kind of fond of it.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions, on the S9 Autoset, to make my first couple nights as seamless as possible? What do I need to know about accessing the data? What program is recommended for the computer to interface with the card? Will I need to buy a new card reader?

Unless you have a pressure change to a much higher pressure the change will be very easy. It is a lot more comfortable than what you are used to. You will now be using an SD card. Most computers have a card reader built in now. Are you using Sleepyhead now? You are going to be very happy with your new machine.

No you won't need a special card reader like you have now. At worst if your computer doesn't have a SD slot you will need a reader/adapter so you can use a USB port on your computer. Cheap generic works fine. $10 at Walmart..less online depending on where you buy it.

Make sure Sleep Quality is set to "On" so you can get detailed data. The default from factory is for "usage" and often DMEs don't change it because usage gets them what they need to prove compliance to an insurance company.

You can use ResScan or Sleepy Head...see above link.
Here's a tutorial on ResScan...it's Windows only though...if you have a Mac you can use SleepyHead since there is a Mac version.

You will like it. It may feel a bit different from what you are used to if you use the EPR exhale relief feature but it is a pleasant "different".
The heated hose is awesome nice in the wintertime if you like a cold bedroom and more humidity (minimal chance for rain out)...plus it allows for better customization of the humidity delivered...so get the ClimateLine heated hose if you can.
You can use lower temps and still maintain constant humidity. Great for those that like cooler air temps blowing on their face in the summer and don't want to turn humidity down or off to get cooler air.

Thanks for all of your encouraging posts and the great links. I am even more excited to get my hands on it but I better get busy reading. We have several computers and 2 laptops, all running Windows. Only the laptops have an SD slot so I will order an adapter for the desk tops. Which software program is better or is it user preference?

I will be getting the heated humidifier and hose which will be fantastic. I could never heat the humidifier on the M Series due to rain out issues so I have always used it as a passover humidifier only. Our master is always cold and I like it that way. Though I live in Northern California, it is often cold at night, even in the summer.

I will update after my first night on the S9. Now, i hope my experience with Sleepmed will be a much better one than it was 5 years ago. They tried to pull a bait and switch on me last time. It wasn't until I told them what I did for a living, did they start to play nicely in the sandbox.

Software choice is user preference. They both show the same data but just present it visually a little different.
The only time I ever opened ResScan was either if I was wanting to confirm something weird looking on SleepyHead or if I wanted to see the red line at 24 L/min so I could evaluate any large leaks a little better.

I usually suggest that people try both..use which one you prefer..use both like I do sometimes. You may find that some things you like better in one over the other. There's no reason not to use both since you have Windows computers.
If you had a Mac you would need to use SleepyHead since it has a Mac version....otherwise you would need virtual Windows installed on the Mac to use ResScan.

My first night on the S9 went fairly well but I think it will take a little time get comfortable with the machine. Surprisingly, It felt a little harder to inhale but easier to exhale than my M Series. Probably just my perception but I really did feel a little air hungry at times. The machine is so quiet that I kept thinking it had shut itself off. LOL!


My AHI was much lower but the average pressure was a little higher than usual. The average pressure was 9.4 when I usually run at 7.9 cm H20. I'll monitor that and maybe increase my APAP range. I am currently set sat a range of 6-10 cm H20. Has anyone noticed this happening?

The humidifier and Climateline hose worked great and not a single drop of rain out. I have to look for a hose cover for the Climateline as the hose was very noisy against our headboard.

I tried to download SleepyHead onto the laptop but it said it was a corrupted file. I may need to get my son to figure out what is going on.

I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong but it is my understanding that you are not supposed to cover the climateline hose.

It can be covered. ResMed makes a thin cover for the regular slimline hosethat works but just about 7 inches short on the ClimateLine but it is a non issue. I just made the short part down near the humidifier.
Several forum members have reported using the thicker fleece covers without any issues. I haven't tried it with mine. I just bought the skinny cover because all I wanted was something besides the plastic to touch me.

Are you using EPR? If so that may account for some of the "air hungry" feeling. If you are using it...at what setting is it at?
The difference in pressures used probably are just the result of the different machine's algorithms. They go about things a little differently and it was the first night also...so it might have just been a night where things were a little different anyway.

Thanks for the link, Pugsy. I will order the hose cover. I don't like the noise from the hose or having plastic touch me. I, also, need to find someone that sells the Hozer to hold my tubing. I bought my original Hozer our sponsor but they no longer carry it for some reason. I left my old one with my Aunt in Canada. That should help with some of the hose issues and I really miss not having it.

I am using EPR with a setting of 2. I may try 3 tonight and see how that goes. I tend to have a baseline shortness of breath, even when awake, so that may be contributing to my air hunger. Good point about the different machine algorithms. I wasn't too concerned about the pressure and i know it is too soon to make any adjustments or assumptions. Patience is my middle name so I am happy to wait it out.

If your starting pressure minimum is 6 cm then it won't do you any good to change EPR from 3 to 2 because it can't go below 4 cm while awake. And awake breathing is what needs to be a little more comfortable.
EPR will reduce the pressure by 1 cm per setting. At lower pressures that reduction couple with lower pressures in general can make a person feel like the air is rather stifling.
You might feel less stifled if the minimum was 7 cm with EPR at 2
or reduce the EPR from 2 to 1.

Good to know. I think I will increase the minimum to 7 cm and leave the EPR at 2 tonight. If that doesn't the seem to do it, then I will reduce the EPR to 1.

i had a much better night last night, although it could have been all the Margaritas I had at dinner. LOL. I set the machine at 7 cm for the min and 11 cm for the high, leaving the EPR at 2. I did not feel air hungry and slept quite well. My AHI was great and my average pressure was 10. I need to tweak the temp. setting still. I found 72 F a little too warm but at 68 F, my mouth and throat are a little dry. I will go for 70 F tonight. Hopefully, I can get the kid to download SleepyHead and I will be in good shape.
All in all, things are going well.
