CPAP and Hot Weather

Have been doing CPAP all-nighters since early this year but have yet to experience the machine and mask in warm weather. We live in northeastern Illinois and have occasional periods of hot weather and humidity which occur from late May into late September I know that the humidifier on my DeVilbiss Intellipap Standard PLUS system won't be needed in the near future but am curious what conditions I should plan to experience 'under the mask'.

Should I plan on using AC more I once did because the mask will make my face feel like a steambath? Is there no negligible difference between a plain old hot night and an equally hot night with the Quattro FX on me?

I'd appreciate hearing the wisdom of others who have CPAP and live in four-season, humid sub-tropical climates.

I do not have summer experience with CPAP, but keep our bedroom pretty cool between low heat in winter and we've had to use the AC a couple times already this spring. My advice is keep yourself comfortable to encourage good sleep.

I'm beginning to wonder how I'll survive the 90+ degree heat and humid weather here in CT come summer time... we don't have air conditioning.

On the bright side, my wife is searching for a swivel to place under my bed pillow.... she is trying to figure out how to captilize on all of that free air flow blowing out of my FFM.

A mask liner really helps because then you don't have the plastic-like silicone in direct contact with your face. I have two padacheek liners so one can be washed and dried while I use the other.

Turn the temp down on your humidifier, and you'll get pleasantly cool air. I don't have AC, and I really enjoy the cool air in my FF mask, plus I aim the vents at my arms to cool off, sometimes.

I turn off all heat to the bedroom. I also use window a/c set at 63 degrees any time it's needed even in the winter. I no longer use a HH, I keep ice water on the nightstand to sip on when I wake up which is about hourly to change position. I also run nature sounds all night. Jim

My wife likes it hot, so I moved into my cool room, and harder bed. Jim

Time to put the distilled h2o in the fridge. Tried this suggestion last year; it works, especially for the earlier part of the night.

It was a crazy night for sure. It is amazing that there weren't more people killed. Be cautious today and stay safe.

The humidity here is over 75%--I haven't had to add water for 3 nights.
Last summer the Elan was very nice. My face moistened it and the airflow made it a mini swamp cooler right on my face.
Sort of like wool felt-covered canteens or the canvas water bags my dad used to take out to the hayfield and hang on the tractor.

No AC in western Montana. Most nights it gets down to the mid 50s, Open the window and put in a box fan to remove warm air from the house at night. We need a sweater in the mornings.

I too live in Northeastern Illinois. I started last Aug 2012 on Cpap and as you will recall, the weather was so dry last year around here and we had the draught! I didnt' have major problems with face sweating last summer. The main problem was 'rainout' in the hose. My solution was turn the humidifier down a notch, wrapped the hose in a snuggie and kept it under the top sheet. I don't use a/c at night and only use a room fan. The noise from the fan can also double as a sleep-aid. I've just been re-gifted with a Brookstone Tranquil Moments sound machine which I'm looking forward to figuring out how to set up. Two sound cards came with it. The sounds range from 'ocean waves' to the sound of a running 'fan'. There is one sound that sounds very interesting to me: the sound of 'wind'. Brings to mind of when I was a little girl and visited someone living on a farm and the sound of wind rustling through the trees at night. It was kind of scary but I liked it.

Probably not where you live, but I live north of the SF Bay and we have "natural air conditioning"--fog that usually keeps things quite pleasant. A few times each summer we have two or three awful hot days of 100+ degree weather, but then our blessed fog rolls in again. For most of the warmer weather (mid-eighties) we open up the house at night to get plenty of cool air, close up in the morning, and two solar attic fans help a lot. I really wish I had AC those few awful nights each summer, but the rest of the year I love my lower electricity bills.

My husband is a winemaker by profession and we do have an air conditioned wine cellar--the wine, after all, must be kept at ideal temperature (but not so the wife!). I've threatened to sleep in there on some of those really hot nights, but wine cases make for a very uncomfortable bed!

OTOH, I lived in Yuma, AZ for one miserable part of a year (fall to spring, I got the H-LL out of there before full-on summer!) and there were people there, including restaurants, who did NOT have AC, even in the cooler late summer when it was "only" 115 degrees. YEEECH!!!!
