time-release melatonin or Ambian?

Post by jaybeem » Wed May 15, 2013 3:31 pm

I have been struggling with exhaustion in spite of great CPAP numbers. I don't think I am getting any REM sleep. I do not have sleep initiation, sleep maintenance, or sleep duration problems. My usual drug of choice, Tylenol PM, hasn't helped the time or two I have tried it. I took a 1.0 mg. time-release melatonin last night, slept almost 10 hours, and am back in the land of the living today.

I just saw my primary care doctor; she wrote me a prescription for 5 mg. of Ambien (5 mg because I am an older female). She thought the Abien would do a better job of restoring normal sleep patterns than the melatonin. I have a family history of addiction and tend to have tolerance that goes straight up...what has me crawling down the hall one night will have me wondering if I should take another dose the next night. I know the Ambien is not an opiate, but are there any addiction issues with it? Any opinions on whether I should try the Ambien or stay with the 1.0 mg. time-release melatonin that worked last night?

I tried the Melatonin for several nights, then took an Ambien. I awoke with my throat so swollen that I looked like I had a tumor, and my mask straps were embedded in my face. I thought it was an anaphylaxis response, and my doctor agreed. I haven't used anything since...I am just going to let my body sort it out.
