apap? cpap? respironics 560 reviews?

Post by docjl » Wed May 08, 2013 7:04 pm

What is the difference between apap and cpap?

The DME that the sleep study set me up with has a prescription for the respironics 560 and the Wisp mask. I guess I'll have a setting of 6....not too much, I guess

Would anyone be able to give me some reviews on these items? Is this a portable device? My hubby is in the military and hasn't lived at our home for 10 years; I do a lot of traveling to visit him. In addition, my two daughters are married and live out of state. This is actually one of the reasons I thought I would check into a dental appliance: portability.

The wisp mask is the one I used during the study. I really thought I would use the nasal pillows as I didn't want anything on my face, but either the tech know how they were to fit, or my nose didn't like them. Ah well.

However, after reading about an increase in TMJ, possible tooth movement etc., I don't know.... On the other hand, I talked to the insurance company and the rep stated that if I get the dental appliance and it doesn't work, I can get the cpap. On the other hand, if I get the cpap, I won't be able to get the dental appliance unless they remove the cpap from my house and, then, maybe I won't be able to use the dental appliance and not have the cpap..... (I had her repeat that info a few times)
In my little brain, then, it makes more sense to get the dental and try it and if it fails, go for the cpap.

thanks. As always, I'm very grateful for every response. I'm really trying to understand this. The only info I get is on here and the one over-the-phone explanation from the sleep tech..

The 560 & Wisp is my setup. I like both very much. The 560 is an excellent little machine and looks like most Wisp user really like it.

I love the 560. Cleaning the hose can be a pain, though, as you are not supposed to submerse the end of it. My first hose got the plunge a few times on accident and stopped heating, eventually. I'm working on finding a way to stop up or cover or seal or something the electrical connection so that I can just submerse it and be done with it. I'd like PR to put a rubber or silicone plug on it so that it can be washed easily.

And I'm still waiting to find out if Insurance will cover heated hoses or not. This may be an out of pocket venture. . . but you can always use the machine either without the upgrade to the heated hose - or just put a regular hose on it if you don't need the heated hose. Is your machine upgraded? Do you use the heated hose?

Otherwise, the machine is a good one. Great data. I have an auto machine but use it for cpap. I'm glad I have the auto so that if my care changes toward that need, I already have the machine. This is the third Phillips Resperonics machine I've owned. The first one was a 550 and returned because the humidifier died. (The machine was not communicating with the humidifier, so both the machine and the humidifier were replaced.) Then the second 550 was replaced with the 560 so that I can better manage the 'weather' conditions in my house.

I just purchased a gently used 560 for back up.

I also really love the fact that the humidifier has the option to heat up for thirty minutes before I put my mask on. . .no more cold shocks.

TMJ - You may find that you grind or clench your teeth less and less and you continue treatment. The only time I do this any longer is if I need another sleep study and my pressure isn't getting it.

I have been using the 560 apap since last November. It is a great machine.
I ditto all of the above and include one little heads-up for you.
Be sure to check the filters regularly, as some of us have had issues with them mysteriously popping out.
I don't think anybody has come up with a solid reason for this yet. It has happened to me 3 times.
Some think it's maybe from coughing while masked, others claim aliens. Some say it's Obama-care.
Other than that, I never have any issues with mine.

It travels very well. I took mine from TN to CT where I stayed for three months and welcomed Hurricane Irene and a new grandson. Just MAKE SURE you don't have any water in the humidifier reservoir when you pack it up. I got a CPAP.com Medical Identification Luggage Tag for CPAP Equipment (https://www.cpap.com/productpage/medica ... pment.html) - and wasn't bothered a bit. It is NOT included in your carry on luggage. . . so you can still have your carry on and your lap top or whatever else you carry - but make sure it has wheels, 'cause that's a bit much to lug around everywhere.

How do you do that i could not find how to pre heat in the menus. Mind you i find that with my series 60 the water chamber is empty or near empty every night, with the settings in the middle of the ranges.

Other than that i like my series 60, just don’t like the fact that it doesn’t show the nightly AHI just the 7 day and monthly averages.

The OP would do well to acquire the software, but if the machine is being used in a travel situation then nightly AHI and leak monitoring might not be possible. In which case I'd go with an S9.

Look in the table of contents in your user manual under Humidifier Preheat.

Mine shows the nightly and the weekly ahi averages.

It pretends to show the leaks, but it doesn't really.

I've been using my backup 760 BiPap the last few nights and I had the same problem so I turned my heated tube off cause I really don't need it now with the weather warm and my water usage was cut in half with the setting on 3.

My 60 series BiPap Pro also shows a nightly AHI along with the usual 7/30 day average.

All the PR S1 machines show for leaks are % of time in large leak. That's sufficient for general purpose issues if it is 0 time in large leak.
