New (?) Phenomenum

Post by pikov22 » Thu Apr 25, 2013 5:31 pm

As I was dropping off to sleep, a strange thing occurred.

Remember how as a kid you would puff your cheeks out and then expel the air to make a rude sound?

Well, that's what happened to me -- involuntarily!

I wonder if the pressure from the CPAP was insufficient to open the airway and sought relief via my mouth??? That can't be good!

You can eliminate the puffy cheeks by learning to keep your tongue up against the roof of your mouth

Mouth leaks!

We have mouth leakers on the forum.

Someone report these mouth leakers to their DME's!

They don't show up as leaks in the data.

Short leaks or even very small leaks can puff out your cheeks or even slowly dry your mouth out and not show up on your leak graph. You don't need a large volume of air to do this.

Depends on data sample rates and how long and how severe the leaks are.

I've been using the Mirage Liberty for about two weeks now. If I don't keep my tongue tight against roof of mouth, my cheeks puff out like a chipmunk. I'm loving the ML so far. I don't recall this happening when using the Mirage Quattro.

That is the main reason I can't sleep on my back, my mouth blows out and wakes me up.

No one has addressed any possible causes yet.

Why is the air going into our mouths instead of down the airway????

Here's a discussion by Fisher and Paykel citing a dry and congested nose as a causal factor: http://www.accessce.com/online_modules/ ... module.htm

Article says that dryness and congestion may be caused by dry cold air from the CPAP. "Up to 75% of those receiving CPAP treatment suffer from a dry and congested nose as a consequence of this treatment.(8-10) This is a result of the drying airflow supplied by CPAP. This dry airflow can exceed the natural ability of the nose to heat and humidify the incoming air."

My air is humidified.

My mouth leak numbers are quite low.

But that begs the question. Why isn't the air going down into my lungs? Is there an inference that air always escapes into the mouth (as the illustration in your post implies)? If so, why bother to increase the *PAP pressure?

Just asking.
