Still looking for Cpap question help Transcend II

Post by Whynotsleep » Wed Apr 24, 2013 8:06 pm

Below is my post from earlier. Question is does anyone know if its a problem to switch from travel Transcend to Auto Devilbis when home vs on the road?

...I just bought the Transcend ( 4 days of use ) and I like it.

I travel three days a week and find the size is perfect vs Devilbis IntelliPAP.
I used the Devilbiss for over 11,800 hours so this Transcend II is new,but working much better for my travel needs.

I started at 8 after a four days set pressure at 7.
Anyone know why with the Transcend, I seem to be getting a mild sore throat and I never had any problems with dryness when using Auto PAP?
I have never used any humidifier to date.

I will say the Transcend size is great. On/Off button is a pain in the dark.

No auto on, I can work with but wish it had it.
The Devilbis is in many ways simply better, but travel is a pain. Thus the new Transcend II.

Anyone know why Transcend recommends a daily air clean cycle and Devilbis Auto Pap does not?

Any comments on just using the Transend for travel and the Devilbis Auto PaP when Home?

Thanks in advance......

Not many Transcend users here at all..much less a Transcend user who also has used a Devilbiss.

This question I think I remember the reason. It is to help dry out the insides of the machine.

Don't know why the throat would be sore since you don't use a humidifier with the Devilbiss either unless it is the filter or way the air is delivered. Or does the Transcend even have a filter?

I don't know of any one who uses it. It isn't a very popular machine among forum members.
If it suits your needs..that's what matters.

So far it does, due to the size. I don't know if it has filters but a guess a call to the Rep is in order.

I can always sell it and go back to my Devilbis brick should it not keep up.

Only other question is switching back and forth between the two Cpap machines. Anyone have experience doing that?

Thanks

Between those 2 machines specifically...I don't know of any one who has done that but several of us forum members have different brands...one for primary use and the other for backup machine or travel.

I happen to have Respironics and ResMed brands...essentially the same models but different brands. A few very minor differences or pros and cons but none that make one machine better than the other. Switching back and forth isn't a problem.

If I switch between my Resmed S9 Autoset and my PR System One Bipap Auto, it seems like I need a night or two to get used to the change, but everyone is different. If I were frequently away from home like you, I'd want a travel machine that was the same machine so that I'd be getting the same therapy I get at home, but some people might not notice the difference.

Thanks, I'm going to try both this week and see how it goes.
Guess my body will tell me in short order.

I know messing with success is not the best choice but I'm already spoiled. This is my first trip traveling with the transcend and the extra room in my bag is amazing.

Funny how 1/2 pound and 4" can add too or maybe take away from my quality of life on the road.

Best regards All

I found little difference between my Autoset and my Intellipap Autoadjust, treatment and comfort-wise.
I like a bit of EPR or whatever DevilBiss calls theirs, and the main difference was the sound it made.
Not enough to matter, actually.
I really like the flexibility of an auto, so I would not even consider the Transcend.
Besides, the DC power options are much more affordable.

I just returned from a ten-day road trip on motorcycle using the Transcend II - - it's a perfect machine to travel with if space and weight are limited and it works just fine as a straight CPAP machine. They have the thirty minute clean cycle to use I suspect to dry the machine out if you are in a humid evironment - - I can't think of any thing else it could possibly do - - and you'll notice that if you remove the bottom part of the machine there is a foam filter element that is attached as part of that bottom tray - - it is glued into the plastic tray - you aren't supposed to remove the foam filter from the tray, but I do wash the foam filter right in the plastic tray with mild - non-oil soap and then rinse it well and be sure to let it dry well before snapping it back in place on the machine. At the point you are ready for a new filter you buy that whole plastic tray with a new foam filter - it is sent to you as an assembled piece with new filter.

I do get a little bit of a sore throat if I have to use the machine in a dry area, but when I am in a humid climate it is not a problem to not have the humidifier - - if you like the machine and want some humidity you could look into their HME humidity system -- it traps humidity from your breath and re-uses the moisture, but at the current time I think it only works with certain nasal masks, so I did not try their HME system.

There is no really big issue with switching between the Tanscend and your other unit -- just getting used to each machine's different traits, but no there are really no therapy issues switching between the two machines if that's what you were asking. I came home and got back on my home unit and slept very well with the Auto-PAP and heated hose.........I like the Transcend for travel, but I much prefer my home machine with humidity and heated hose - felt great to get back on it for a good sleep.

One tip I might add: I put some velcro straps on the Transcend so I can strap it to head board of the bed or some other location so it didn't move around at night when I roll over in bed -- the machine itself is so light that you can roll over and pull it right off the bed side table if your not careful, but with the straps it was no problem. Also a couple nights in hotels I simply opened the bed side table drawer -- wiped it clean of any dust with a wash cloth and placed the Transcend in the "open" drawer and left the drawer open all night with the machine laying inside - that also worked to keep it from falling on the floor when I rolled over and took more hose in the process. Also at night you can feel the little protrusion on the power button so you can turn it on and off by brail by feeling for the little numb on the power button - you'll get used to that quickly.

Hope that answers some of your questons - - if you want more info on the HME humidity system they have for the machine you can look here for starters: http://www.mytranscend.com/2011/03/tran ... -our-cpap/

Great input and thanks for sharing.

I called the Factory today and the rep told me the airdry after each use was part of the original system. They wanted to allow for water to be blown out of the tube should you be bothered by it.
The dry mode is not required now or needed unless you want to dry your hose.

After looking at AHI info downloaded from the Transcend I wanted to let you know about one other thing to be aware of..........I have been on CPAP/APAP for several years and my last two machines Icon Premo, and Icon Auto have data capabilities. When I review the information from those machines that I use at home my average AHI on the Premo (CPAP) was 2.8, and on the Auto it is 1.6 - - I have never had a zero AHI. So when I looked at the data from the Transcend II - it shows several nights with "0" AHI and the nights that do have events are in the .7 area. I think the software/algorithym in the Transcend is not as accurate as on a more capapble data reporting machine - - in other words after comparing the data to my home machines with the data from the Transcend I get the distinct impression that it does not do a very accurate job of reporting your AHI number - - there is no way I had zero AHI as the machine reported. So I just wanted to point that out on this thread comparing the Transcend to a more traditional desktop CPAP/APAP machine - - I just would not lend a lot of credence to the sleep data from the Transcend. It's still a fine "Travel" machine and does it's job well considering it's diminutive size and weight, but don't count on the data too much.

Good to know thx. I went back to the brick ( Devilbis ) last night and slept great. For now this seems like its going to be very convent for travel.
