BULLETPROOF COFFEE -- FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Post by Loreena » Wed Mar 20, 2013 10:00 am

I stumbled upon a mention of Bulletproof Coffee in this forum, so I researched it and found a Youtube video on how to make it (below), although there are tons of references to it online. I really think this is my salvation weight-loss program. I am 5'11 and weigh 215, but Wegman's machine says I should weigh 170 (180 would be great for me).

So I gathered all the ingredients and have been making it for the last week. It tastes very good and I believe I have been eating a lot less and exercising a lot more. Bottom Line: I Think This Stuff is Wonderful. So I had to share it with you folks. Below is the stuff I got in case you want to know what I'm using.

Video for Bulletproof Coffee:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSj4Zp-C3FE

Wegman's Whey Protein (Vanilla) (1/2 scoop) [This is to add some sweetness]

Mayorga Whole Bean Organic Coffee Dark Roast (Costco)

Nature's Way Coconut Oil (2 tblspn)

NOW MCT Oil (1 to 2 tblspn (but start off with 1/2 tspn. as I believe it makes some folks get "the runs"--at least in the beginning) [This ingredient is of utmost importance; it is 10 times better than coconut oil]

http://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-100%25- ... OW+MCT+oil

Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter Unsalted (3 to 4 tblspoon) [The video says to use 1 tblspn., but I read that another guy says it's better if you use 3 to 4 tblspoon, so I'm using about 3 tblspns right now. This is butter made from cows that eat grass; apparently this is far, far better than regular butter]

Then blend away and hopefully you'll lose enough weight (if you're overweight) so you can lower the cpap pressure.

Not everyone who loses weight gets to lower their pressure. I had to raise mine. YMMV.

Yes, weight loss is no guarantee of reduced pressure, but isn't it amazing that you can ingest fat and LOSE fat???

60 lbs down so far

Protein powder is not part of the original bulletproof coffee, BTW.

Does it taste like butter? Do you have to "like" the taste of butter to like this?

I would be tempted to try it, except for the fact that I have almost always detested the taste of real butter, especially if it's been liquified. When we eat lobster, for example, I am the one that always has to pass when offered the melted butter.

Does it taste like butter?

Regards, Nate

Nate....re your butter question: I think there is a tiny taste of butter. I put about a tablespoon in my coffee (along with coconut oil and MCT oil).

The idea still works even if you don't use butter. MCT oil has NO taste. Virgin coconut oil is wonderful in coffee (especially if you throw some unsweetened cocoa in there--kind've like a Mounds bar!)

BTW, to get the full impact of bulletproof coffee, eliminate (or cut WAY down) on grains and sugars.

I have two cups of BPC every morning and don't even think about food until mid to late afternoon. No protein powder in mine though...I try hard to avoid all frankenfoods and anything processed.

But watch out for the protein powder...could be hidden carbs or sugars in there, and if you're eating high fat, it usually isn't necessary to supplement protein beyond eating some good meat/fish or cheese for lunch or dinner.

Thanks! Everything you said is great to know. I don't taste much butter at all and I might dispense with the protein powder now.

Do you object to the saltiness of butter, or something else? Be sure to use unsalted butter (although I kind of like the salted kind in coffee, too!). Butter is, after all, simply the fat in cream. If you don't like the fatty mouth feel you may not like it much, but you can give it a try and see.

The directions above don't say, but you'll want to blend it in some way, so you're not drinking an oil slick on top of coffee (they probably show that in the video). Most people use big things like a blender, a vitamix or a stick blender, but what also works fine is a $3 frother from Ikea. It gives it a foamy, latte-like texture.

I do a variation of coconut oil and coconut milk with a splash of cream in mine, no butter. Just depends on my mood. And it is a bit of a problem, because I'm often not hungry again until 2 or 3 p.m. when it sometimes isn't convenient to stop and eat. On occasions like today when I don't have time to stop for lunch, though, I'm actually OK until dinner time--just a little bit hungry.

I'm not worried about lowering my pressure or anything, I just need to lose about 15 - 20 pounds off my mid section so I do not need to go up another size in my pants. I may give this a try and see if it actually works for me, I love my coffee but I only drink it black, no sugar and no cream.

I did cut back on my calorie intake one time to about 1000 calories a day, in a week, I lost about 5 pounds but it came back on very quick, I love to eat all kinds of food too much.

I am going to have to try this...I have plenty of coconut oil and MCT...No butter, as I use coconut in place of butter on everything. It would be nice to find something that would help me loose about 30 pounds!

Thanks very much for elaborating. Now I understand that I will have to go in a different direction. I thought that this recipe might be consistent with the Mediterranean Diet and the advice of Dr. Sinatra, which I am following in his book with the overlong title:

"The Great Cholesterol Myth: Why Lowering Your Cholesterol Won't Prevent Heart Disease-and the Statin-Free Plan That Will"

and maybe it is consistent with it, but it would be a very unpalatable form of magic for me because I don't like lattes or cream or any flavoring in my coffee and always drink it very dark and hot and unsweetened. I guess it was unrealistic for me to hope that the taste and feel of these added healthy ingredients would be somehow hidden.

I guess I will have to keep getting my cholesterol in other ways. I have stopped my statin, am following his book and diet and supplements (although I don't buy/use his brand) and am gradually losing weight, so far from 214 to 185 with exercise in the pool to try to rebuild my leg muscles damaged by the statin.

I understand that finding things that taste good to each of you and to me is very important to "sticking to" any plan, but one person's "yum" is another's "yuck" and visa versa.

Best regards, Nate

Nate, opt for fatty meat, pastured eggs, and fish then. Remember fats contain ESSENTIAL fatty acids your body really does need. Good fats will raise your HDLS and help you use the fat soluble vitamins from foods you eat. Don't forget olive oil in salads. Save butter for cooking.
