Apnea and Strokes

Whether or not you stent after a stroke, one thing to always consider is to check for obstructive sleep apnea. A study by Yaggi in 2004 showed that people with obstructive sleep apnea are twice as likely to have a TIA, stroke, or die in 5 years. Another study by Dyken showed that 77% of men and 64% of women who suffered a stroke had obstructive sleep apnea. A recent study out of Sweden found that 50% of women aged 20-70 had obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea has been shown to increase your chances of having a stroke by 2-3 times normal. It also causes your blood to thicken, predisposing to clotting within blood vessels.

With all this evidence, it should to standard of care to screen for OSA after any stroke. You could even argue that with such a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in this country, you should be screened for obstructive sleep apnea even before having a stroke if you have any of the classic risk factors.

Drops in pulse O2 during apneas have been shown to be leading factors in strokes.

Thanks for the posts. Note studies confirm that treatment "normalizes cerebral autoregulation", but we're still waiting for studies to confirm less strokes.

Yep I can speak with authority that it can cause a stroke and congestive heart failure.
