Chemical/plastic smell in my nostrils

Post by Dreamingofsleep » Thu Feb 28, 2013 9:15 pm

Hi everyone,
Does anyone else experience a lingering plastic/chemically smell in their nose in the morning? I can't see how this would be good for you and wonder if anyone else notices this. I have tried cleaning my hoseand mask (have nasal pillows), soaking in vinegar and water and rinsing well, but it doesn't seem to phase it.

Thanks
Dreaming

bump... This topic comes up every few months and the reactions/answers usually range from "so what" all the way to "sheer panic". Maybe you could tell us if the smell is a burnt plastic smell, motor overheating smell or something like that. New plastic can outgass for quite a while until it stabilizes. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-outgassing.htm

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Sometimes new equipment has a slight plastic smell, which quickly fades.
Be careful where you store your silicone parts; silicone can absorb scent from anything volatile used in the room.
If the scent is a bother, you might try placing a cotton ball with a dab of essential oil or vanilla behind the machine below the air intake.

I think there are some things that happen with perceived smells that don't come from the machine.

Breathing filtered air at night may make you sense of smell more sensitive once you take the mask off. CPAP may clear up your sinuses with the same effect. GERD/Reflux, etc. may change, affecting your breathing passages.

I think there may be some sort of subtle effects from changes in swelling, moisture levels, blood supply, O2 levels, neurological effects, etc.

There might be some sort of changes in the culture of microorganisms growing in your nose and throat. Even in a healthy person, there are lots of bugs growing in there. Some are probably even beneficial.

For whatever reasons, a lot of people notice changes in smell when doing CPAP. It's often a mystery what actually changes.

I just purchased the Airsense 10 and the smell of plastic/ chemicals is very strong. I needed to take it off after a few minutes. I did wash all parts with vinegar and water. I know it is the latest machine technology wise but I am not sure how healthy the new machine is...

Are you filling the humidifier with water? If you let the humidifier run dry, but the heat plate is not turned off, you will get a horrible smell. Does the scent linger in the house, or is it just in the mask and tubing? If you can smell it in the house then I recommend you contact your DME, or call the helpline for the manufacturer of the equipment. Burning plastic smells are never normal...
