Gel vs Silicone?
Gel vs Silicone?
Wondering what the difference between gel vs silicone in masks means. I have only had silicone on my Nasal Pillow and Full Face mask. Silicone is more thin and works great with the pillows. I can't see gel working on pillows, but on the other hand regular Nasal and Full Face with gel might be a good idea. Leaks would probly be cut down a lot. So my question is is gel better than silicone when it comes to Full Face and regular Nasal masks in stopping leaks and in comfort?
Re: Gel vs Silicone?
Strictly a matter of comfort and preference...no advantage to either one.

Re: Gel vs Silicone?
for comfort, I totally agree with LSAT!
I tried the comfortgel blue FFM and the gel cushion conformed to my face really nice. But that only lasted for 2-3 hours.
As my facial muscles relaxed during sleep, the gel did not seems to be able to react quickly and leaks erupted. I spent time chasing mask leaks all over my face. The only solution was to take the mask off and let the gel cushion cool a little.
whereas the silicone on my Quattro seems to be able to move & react to changes faster.
Your results with gel may vary quite a bit from mine.

Re: Gel vs Silicone?
Some gel masks have a deep enough cushion to allow for minor (but attractive) facial anomalies that silicone does not.
Of course, not all gel masks are the same. Just more shapes and sizes for still more different faces.

Re: Gel vs Silicone?
i have both gel and silicone masks,
due to my pressure being so high (95% is 19. i find that the gel is more comfortable since i have to really crank the mask tight to my face to get rid of leaks. i find the silicone masks bottom out

Re: Gel vs Silicone?
I have used the Respironics ComfortGel Nasal Mask (NOT the Blue - the older one) and am currently using the ResMed SoftGel.
"I" do find that both of those Gel Nasal Masks DO reduce the leaks better than the non gel Nasal masks.
And I find that the ResMed one does an even better job than the Respironics one.
And that may be because the ResMed one is made all in one cushion, whereas the Respironics one has a silicone cushion that fits on TOP of the separate Gel cushion.

Re: Gel vs Silicone?
If you're having problems with the fit changing when you go to sleep, make an effort to relax your face and try to make the mask leak when you're putting it on. I used to subconsciously tense my face into the mask when I put it on to stop the leaks. Then when I relaxed, it would leak. Now, I try to relax my face and make the mask leak, and then adjust it to stop the leaks.
