Anybody gotten tonsil infection from CPAP?

Post by Suddenly Worn Out » Mon Feb 25, 2013 5:06 pm

Found out today I have a tonsil infection and I am pretty sure it is from using CPAP longterm. Anybody else had this? I know Ive read a ton of people get sinusitis flareups from CPAP use, maybe some ear probs. Wondered if anyone out there has had tonsil infections from it like me?

Best evidence points to the exact opposite.
See your doctor about treating it with antibiotics. You may need to nag.

I just came off a ten day cycle of amoxicillin. Ive been having upper respiratory infections repetitiously for about a year and a half now. The dentist said he could see what appeared to be like "white grains of rice" behind my tonsil. Gross sounding. But I was not surprised.

You probably need to get them removed. When they are not working right they harbour bacteria instead of protecting you from them.

Didn't your dentist say something about long term treatment for that?

Google up "tonsiliths." Many people have them and figure out their own way to prevent or reduce them. Various daily hygiene, gargling, and other things have been suggested.

Probably nothing to do with infection from CPAP, unless you're letting a sewer grow in your hose and/or water tank. Although mouth breathing and dry mouth might make them worse.

I recently had a flat tire...I'll bet that's from CPAP too.

The guy was a dentist who took a bunch of dental sleep medicine courses and training. He makes oral appliances on the side, like some pulmonary specialists do CPAP on the side.

Not really. He didnt seem that concerned about it. He said I could be sent to an ENT and just cut out my tonsils and the tissues back there, adenoids as well I suppose. I do mouth leak bad and in the winter months my humidifer burns out the water supply and I will frequently wake up with dry mouth, despite heated humidification.

All I know is my throat is sore a lot in the last year, I have a lot of post nasal drip, several sleep doctors have mentioned "I have enlarged tissues back there," and I will flare up with respiratory infections three, four maybe five times a year. And its gotten old.

I use Nasacort AQ steroid spray. So that keeps the turbinates at bay, I hope at least.

How is your sleep therapy going?

Frequent tonsilitis is often associated with poor sleep. I used to get it 2 or 3 times a year before CPAP. Have only had it once now in 3 years (when I wasn't sleeping properly).

Try taking some good quality bee propolis daily. Doesn't matter if you are taking antibiotics or any other medications - the propolis won't affect any of them, but it WILL keep infections of the mouth, nose, throat etc. at bay.

Can't remember the last time I had a sore throat, and my DH used to get them all the time until we met 15yrs ago and I started him on propolis.

No, I don't sell the stuff - just believe in it's healing properties, and have done for decades.

Your XPAP didn't cause this infection - germs did.

Cheers,
xena

my sleep therapy is not going that great. I used to have frequent sore throats and sinusitis for years BEFORE CPAP. After CPAP, seemed to calm down for about two years the sore throat and sinusitis thing. But I was also living in an apartment with central air then also and that made a huge difference I found.

The last year or so the sore throat/sinusitis/bronchitis thing has crept back. I strongly suspect it has as much to do with living in a farmhouse with no air circulation and no air filtration as it has with anything. I know Im allergic to dust. ANY KIND of dust. My primary care doctor has under "allergies" one thing: DUST. He has me diagnosed with the kind of sinusitis you can get just from barometric pressure changes or low humidity, I forget what its called. Or just a lot of any kind of dust flares my sinuses up.

I'd rate my sleep quality as poor right now. Fighting these recurrent ear, nose and throat infections has worn me down. I have stopped exercizing in the winter out of fear of flaring up my sinuses as well and thats a vicious cycle. No exercise feel like dog sh*t. No good sleep, feel like dog sh*t.

Ive felt way worse than I feel now before. Ive also felt way better than I feel right now.

Yes. I just discovered I have yet another tonsil infection, again, and I never got them so frequently before using a c-pap. I'm not too happy with it. You can clean the things of course but it's basically not the cleanest environment for air, considering. I'm just tired of it all.
Now the c-pap isn't totally stopping me from snoring {it used to}, and I've tried an over-the-mouth mask too as well as taking the machine in to see if anything was wrong with it.
So this to me is scary...the altitude is turned all the way up on the c-pap too. For some reason it's not enough. So I have to go back to a doctor about it {and I'm changing offices as well so, more "fun"}...lots of annoyance and worry. Maybe "looking forward to" another sleep study {bleeah}. But the throat infections need to stopped somehow.
Beware of antibiotics. Before bed take a good {refrigerated style} acidophilous if you take antibiotics. Thank to a throat infection that wasn't responding {to eventually 3 different types of antibiotics, one after the other}, I ended up in the hospital because of the antibiotics, they upset my bowels {sorry for mentioning that, but I thought I was going to die, and want others to know try to stay healthy with acidophilous} . They gave me another anti-b for the internal problem that the anti-b's caused...and finally THAT cured my throat, just by chance, since the meds were to cure my intestines. The whole stupid circus can be enough to make a person want to jump off a cliff. One thing leads to the other and it's a circle of illness. So, I hope I can put and end to it, can't believe I have another fricking throat infection.

I had my tonsils out so I don't get throat infections - very happy about that. Sorry that you have this problem, hope you get some relief.
