New mask, HDHP, and HSA question

Post by rcktfn » Mon Feb 18, 2013 4:58 pm

I started a High Deductible Health Plan this year. I needed a new mask, but my DME wouldn't give me one because the doctor would not renew my prescription until I went in for a visit. I won't have time to go see the Dr. for another month or so but I needed a new mask now so I ordered one online that was not "assembled" to avoid needing the prescription. I was able to pay with my HSA debit/credit card without a problem. My question is, did I miss out on an insurance "negotiated rate" doing it this way? Obviously, the way I did this, insurance was not involved at all.

If I didn't need to new prescription, something tells me that my original DME would have probably overcharged for the mask to the insurance, and my negotiated rate would have probably still been around $92 if not more, which I would have been responsible for anyways.

I was just curious if anyone had any input or experience with this. If next time I can get a better pricing, I would like to know.

Thanks in advance.

I would have recommended you buy from an online DME, like the sponsor (CPAP.COM) if for no other reason than it looks better if you every questioned on it.

Throw the concept of negotiated rate out the window. I've yet to see a negotiated rate that was less than the "real" retail (vs MSRP).

The negotiated rate for my APAP machine is around $1600, but I got it for half that. With better service.

That's my $.02

Any doctor, dentist, PA etc can write a prescription. It does not need to be a 'sleep doctor'. Also...my DME has been using my 4 year old prescription and has never asked me for an update.
