The bed is strange - I can take everything out of the middle and it will still stand on its own. (My husband calls it our 'new waterbed skin'. ) If we get the soft sided mattress, the frame that holds the mattresses is already the heavy duty frame needed for the softside waterbed. If we choose to go with the hardside, we will just take that frame out and put the correct pedestal down with the frame which will fit right above the rails of the bed. The bed is large enough to go completely around the waterbed without any issue. It will end up with two inches spare at the foot of the bed, that's about it. So, we'll try it and see how it works. I'll post pics if we decide for a hardside - 'cause that'll be interesting. . . to say the least.
Oh good. I had visions of it crashing through in the middle of the night with water spurting everywhere!
I know back in the 70's when they first came out - all the apartment leases where I lived suddenly had clauses against waterbeds because they were afraid of the leaks and that they would go through the floors of the old houses.

I was a bit slow back in 1981 to adjust my habits according to the special care needed when in a water bed. I mean, I'd spent my life sitting in bed sewing and using the mattress for a pin cushion. Yeah, I did that.

You're a bed sewer too??!! Grief, I cannot remember how many times I got in trouble for that as a kid!!
Now I just get in trouble for the pins that fall on the floor. . . and find their way into a foot here and there. . .

Bed "sewer" conjures up a bad mental image.

Welp.
We just bought our water bed. We went back and forth between hard side and softside. . .and back and forth and back and forth. We just ordered two hardside dual mattresses that fit my lumbar need and his NO LUMBAR! . . .need.
The deciding factors were literally because we couldn't find the mix match choices we needed in the softside and my allergies (no dust mites!)
We have the frame - so we're just going to use that. Our bed will be put around it when we know that this is for sure what we're going to stay with.
I hope we both sleep MUCH better.
Thank you, everyone!

The waterbed got here Friday. Hubby tore down the bed Friday night, I slept on the upstairs queen that we have in the guestroom, hubby slept on the twin that he has in his office, as the queen is a foam mattress and way too hard for him to get any decent sleep on.
My AHI WENT DOWN on the Queen. Friday and Saturday were both under 2.0!
The waterbed was filled and ready to go last night. We slept on it, my AHI was up (3.19), but I'm thinking that's probably more because I'm sick than anything else. My back and hips felt no different than they did when I slept on the Queen. Good support , but I still tend to get very stiff.
So - continue to try it for the next month and see how it goes. I think all in all I probably did sleep better if I weren't sick. I certainly was comfortable. The temp was perfect, not having any pressure points was wonderful. . . I'm hoping the AHI and ZEO reflect a more relaxed and healthier sleep.
We purchased individual mattresses - so if either of us are uncomfortable, we can make changes as needed.
I'll give it a month before I request another sleep study to see if there is something else the sleep docs can help with - though the beds THERE are not waterbeds. . . don't know how that will work.
