Hypoglycemic episodes and sleep apnea
Hypoglycemic episodes and sleep apnea
Has anyone noticed a correlation between episodes of hypoglycemia and clusters of sleep apnea. I woke up last night and could tell that my bs was low I wish now I had checked to see exactly what it was. Instead I ate something and went back to bed without checking it. I am sure with the way I felt the amount of carbs I ate and what my bs was when I got up it was severely low. Looking at sh results this morning I had a bad cluster of events at about the same time I woke up. 9 oa in 8 minutes and 12 in 15 minutes. Was wondering if the the low bs caused the apneas or just a coincidence. Can't think of any reason why it would. But looks suspicious.

Re: Hypoglycemic episodes and sleep apnea
Maybe the stress from the apneas caused the blood-glucose to drop? Was wondering if the the low bs caused the apneas or just a coincidence.
I can't say - no experience with blood-glucose disorders in my family.

Was the bad cluster of events maybe predominately central in nature? If so maybe you woke up feeling ill and the machine flagged awake breathing irregularities. I have had this happen. Woke up feeling like I need to go throw up but not turn off the machine. Instead I lay there awake doing so "fighting the nausea" breathing and the machine recorded a truck load of centrals for about 45 minutes till the nausea passed and I finally went back to sleep.
Did you note the exact time you woke up feeling ill and compare it to the time the cluster started?
I suppose it is also possible that maybe the stress of a cluster of events caused an imbalance in the body (like the stress hormone thing) and that may have affected blood sugar levels.

Was all obstructive in the cluster there was one central shortly after and one unknown before and after the cluster. I took off the mask and got up so the time is recorded.

I have never heard of a cluster of apnea events triggering low blood sugar but that doesn't mean anything...I sure haven't read everything out there about that stuff.
It seems logical though, if we think about what the stress of apnea events does to the body, that it could very well mess up the bodies metabolism and trigger an episode.

Not sure i guess the apneas could have lead to the low bs. Won't change treatment either way just made me curious

Re: Hypoglycemic episodes and sleep apnea
If you go low, you probably should make it a habit to always check you blood sugar numbers .. says the guy who awoke with a SEVERE low and was confused so thought the shaking was due to a fever and took Tylenol instead .. Thank goodness I am Type 2. I would have been in real trouble if I was Type 1. So, as it was my liver eventually did a dump and my blood sugar shot through the roof.
But I hope next time, I will remember to check - no matter how confused I am.
I tend to have apneas (especially central) when my blood sugar goes low. I suspect the low blood sugar messes with how well my brain functions - even the autonomic nervous system, such as breathing. At least in my case that's the order I see, rather than the other way around.
