mouthpiece instead of chin strap

Post by nbf » Fri Jan 04, 2013 10:16 pm

I'm using a nose pillow for breathing and am trying to find something besides a chin strap for keeping my mouth shut. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The alternative is taping your mouth shut. If you are not comfortable with that, try a FF mask.

I have cut my own from blue painters tape.

I bought this for $16. One of my tooth was hurting, I thought maybe it had to do with chinstrap.

This mouth piece was causing OSA There was less space for my tongue so it was getting shoved to the back. That was what I was trying to avoid in the first place

I did try to utilize it still by trimming the inner circle to give my tongue more space but it was still not enough. Others with a bigger mouth might have success. So I'm sticking to chinstraps.

I also tried a cheaper boil and bite mouthguard from a sporting goods store. Total junk.

I also have had mouth breathing problems since I started with PAP therapy 4 months ago.

I tried the Resmed chinstrap and I would take it, with all of my headgear, off in the middle of the night and not be aware of doing so. I then tried a hybrid mask which leaked more than I would like. I then resorted to taping my mouth with Micropore tape which got rid of the mouth breathing but also presented other difficulties. I then tried the "tongue" trick (placing the end of the tongue against the front teeth so that the remainder of the tongue contacted the roof of the mouth) and it didn't work at first. I am getting better in maintaining it in that position-it works for me every second night as opposed to every fourth or fifth night. Maybe I will get it perfect with more practice. I will keep trying it because I would like to keep the treatment as simple as I can.

It would also help if you could go to the "user control panel" and post your equipment. It might aid others on the forum to help you with your treatment.

Best of luck!

Thanks for all the replies. I have a fairly full beard and mustache. Even tho there may be even more benefits to shaving (like people not recognizing me!), I'm resistant to getting on a shaving regimen. So the taping may not be an option for me. Training my tongue to stay in place to block the air sounds like a good option. Thanks again for all the ideas! This forum is gold!!!

I went to the site and now have to decide among their three styles - decisions decisions

But most interesting was that the site said that 6% of people who use them report BETTER SEX - I'm guessing a Hannibal Lector fetish
