Makeshift hose cozy ideas?

Post by kaiasgram » Wed Jan 02, 2013 2:47 pm

I'm trialing a PR Auto BiPap this week from my doctor's office, starting tonight. Thank goodness they gave me a humidifier to use with it but because I normally use my S9 with a Climateline heated hose I don't have a hose cozy to use with this BiPap machine/hose. Any good ideas for a makeshift hose wrap for this week?

I heard mention of tube socks with the toes cut out and rubber bands. Never tried it though.

Do you even need a humidifier in N. Cali? Every time I tried to use it, water tank was still full in the morning. Room temp was at a steady 77F.

Hi Kaiasgram

Are you able to buy fleecy material (Polar or Blizzar like the one on scarf ?) If yes, you can buy let's say a strip of 5 inches. You wrap it around the hose and use those elastics you buy at $ store used to stile the girls to fix the material (a big bunch for $1). Sorry I don't know how do you name those packages of hair you do on girls with an elastic (lulu style ).

I did that on my System One hose out of laziness. You can buy more expensive velcro attach at the hardware but it doesn't worth the investment for only one week.

Be well

Rosie

That's what I use......it works great......even without using heated humidification.
It's also a good way to recycle some old socks.

I cut a small triangle out of a pair rag wool socks, slid them both onto the hose one after another. Then used old hair elastics to tie the socks onto the hose.
worked just as well as the hose cover I got later.

Hey, thanks everyone! I'm off to Target to get some cheapo socks to cover the hose with. Cosmo, I'm in the Sacramento valley and humidification is definitely helpful here ('specially since I'm feeling a cold/congestion coming on ). The humidistat in my bedroom reads 33% and my S9 is using a fair amount of water each night. Compared to a couple of months ago when the humidity was around 49% and much less water was being used.

Even here in the foggy and wet (very wet right now!) North Bay area of California I need some humidification because our gas furnace central heating dries out the air in the house. Our heat is off at night (and not that high during the day--63 at most) and I have my PRS1 set to "classic mode" for some warm, moist air to soothe my nasal passages.

My first hose cover was a winter scarf that I added a few stitches to to hold it in a tube shape. The pompoms were a hit at the DME. For the short hose on my Swift FX, I used a pair of children's fingerless mittens, and buttoned them together.

Sounds like you've got it well in hand, but another quickie hose cozy idea might be to wrap it in an ace bandage.

Or buy a length of remnant fleece fabric and use safety pins to secure it around the hose (NO, I don't mean you stick the pins in the hose ). Rubber bands would work, too.

I realized I had a piece of wool flannel, lightweight and just about the right size, left over from my sewing days. I'm wrapping it around the hose and tying with left over trim from another sewing project. Works and didn't cost a penny.
