APAP vs CPAP for a newbie

I was diagnosed a few weeks ago, and have been testing equipment from my DME for about a week. Rx was for a CPAP machine (pressure=11).
Been reading a lot here about APAP. While I am lucky enough to live in a country that will pay for most of my prescribed machine, I am also lucky enough to be able to afford whatever machine I want.

So - any thoughts or advice on using APAP vs CPAP, when Rx did not specify APAP?

Im a newbie for sure.....but my advice will probably mirror everyone else here.

The difference in cost between a CPAP and an APAP is very negligible.....as little as $50 difference.

The APAP machine CAN do both CPAP and APAP.

The CPAP machine is just that.....a CPAP machine.

I recommend getting the most for your money and getting a machine that will do both.

My DME only provides the top two APAP machines (ResMed S9 Autoset and Respironics System One). The machine is set up as an apap or cpap depending on the doctors prescription. My autoset was initially set up for a continuous pressure of 15 cmH2O. After 30 days, my doctor advised changing to a Apap mode with a range of 13 to 17 cmH2O. I have not seen much difference in how I feel between Apap and Cpap mode but leaks are less in Apap mode. Good luck! I love my autoset! My insurance company gave me a nice Christmas present by purchasing the autoset early rather than continuing on with the rent to own plan (saved me $720)!

Get the Resmed S9 Autoset. It's the top of the line and you can operate it in either autoset or cpap mode. Once you get adjusted in the cpap therapy, you will be able to tell the difference on how you feel under straight cpap mode or autoset therapy. Your treatment may also differ. For now, get the S9 autoset.

just a tip. If you plan on submitting through the Assisted device program (ON), they will only pay for an APAP if it is prescribed and you meet specific treatment requirements. Otherwise, they will only pay for CPAP.
