Do you still nap?

Post by ddk » Tue Dec 11, 2012 10:08 pm

Before CPAP therapy I was napping at least once a day and sometimes I'd sleep for half the day on and off due to extreme exhaustion. On average I was sleeping about 10-12 hours a day and getting virtually no benefit out of it.

Now with therapy I'm feeling a lot better and I'm sleeping on average 6-7 hours a day. But towards the afternoon, I find I'm getting that all too familiar drowsiness that becomes almost overwhelming. Still, I can usually get through it with a nice caffeine kick from a Red Bull or double-espresso shot and the fatigue only seems to last half an hour or so rather than forcing me to nap for half an hour or more several times a day.

But last night I suffered a pretty bad bout of insomnia and ended up eventually falling asleep without the mask. I only had a few hours sleep and towards mid-afternoon I decided I was simply too exhausted to stay up and thought that risking putting my sleep clock out of whack wasn't going to be much of an issue given my insomnia and exhaustion anyway. After an hour's nap with the CPAP, though, I feel pretty good and think I can probably get back to a normal cycle.

This makes me think that maybe I shouldn't be fighting that afternoon drowsiness and just have a short nap with the CPAP. Does anyone else do this?

If I can get close to 8 hours of sleep at night I find I don't have a need to nap during the afternoon.
If I get 7 to 7 1/2 hours...I might get a little drowsy.
If I get less than 7 hours of sleep I almost always will feel the need to nap..get drowsy and sort of nod off and have to get up and move around a bit.
If I get less than 6 hours of sleep...I usually will succumb to the need for nap and take one.

All of the above are with nice low AHI numbers, minimal leaks and a usually decent quality of hours asleep.
If I have a bad night..even with 8 hours of sleep I will have a need to nap.

If I'm not active in the afternoon, and sit down to watch TV, I'll fall asleep for about 1/2 hour. Before CPAP, I'd fall asleep for 3 hours.

Yes, most days, and like Pugsy, my napping kinda depends on the night before. Since when trying to avoid naps I often end up being overtaken and falling asleep without my mask, my sleep doc suggested I plan a nap in my schedule so at least it's with the machine.

Before CPAP, I would take a nap during my lunch period. Haven't napped since.

Just prior to diagnosis, I was napping on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and even found I sometimes needed a morning nap on Saturdays.

Now, I still nap on Sunday afternoons, mostly due to it being an enjoyable habit. By masking up, I find the nap is much shorter than before.

I still nap. Naps are good for you as long as they don't interfere with your normal sleep cycle. Sheriff

I nap most afternoons but they are about 1/2 to 3/4 hour long. I generally only get about 7 hours sleep a night. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, which has a fatigue factor so I don't fight a nap. I'm retired anyway so I can nap whenever I need to - only with my mask and machine though.

I still nap everyday for an hour. Maybe it is something that I have gotten used to.

I average about 7 hours of sleep each night.
I saw somewhere that 7 hours was better than 8 or 6 or whatever.

That is sufficient for me to not have to usually take naps.

I do take a nap when I really feel the need.
Like last week when I was up for 21 hours straight (due to traveling & business meetings).

Even when I am a little tired, I avoid naps as much as possible because I can't seem to just nap for 15 -30 minutes & then the nap interferes with my sleeping that night.

I never napped before and don't now, although on rare occasions I've nodded off watching tv or reading, but only for a few seconds. Napping leaves me feeling so sluggish that I don't become fully awake again until the next full-night's sleep.

In my teens I would take an afternoon nap to get me through very late Saturday nights, but remember feeling sluggish even then, so that's probably when I stopped.

Cheers,
xena

I pretty much never nap now that I use CPAP therapy, unless I get up 4am to fish/dive till 2pm, in the hot sun all day, then add a couple beers washing boat down. Throw on CPAP, nap a couple hours.

Before CPAP, around noon many days, eyes fludder, needed a couple of strong coffee, could nap every day, if could, or wife and kids allowed me.

Yes, I still nap on many afternoon, largely because I sleep 7 or less hours during the work week. Some days, I really feel I need it; others I do it because I like to. I mentioned it to my sleep doc last time I saw him, and he was OK with it, because he knew I wasn't getting the optimum amount of sleep at night. If I catch up on my sleep debt (as on a vacation), I nap less. I do *always* mask up for my naps, BTW.
