Insomnia

Post by ddk » Tue Dec 11, 2012 8:54 am

Every so often I seem to suffer from insomnia but lately it's been crazy, especially since I tend to get very tired in the afternoons still. It's now 2am and I just can't fall asleep. I've never had it this bad, this often, until I've been on CPAP therapy.

Is this common? Do other people suffer this as a result of CPAP therapy as well?

I've never had insomnia until I started Cpap either. I started staying up really late around the tired week of treatment. I just wasn't tired until about 2 or 3 am..that lasted until I couldn't take it anymore about 4 weeks. I was so tired and feeling really sick, so I stopped taking naps and started putting headphones on with either binaural beats and ambient music, rain and wind, or guided meditation. It took a few weeks and the first few days I laid there listening for about 3 or 4 hours and that turned into 2 and 3 hours and now finally I fall asleep right away again. Kelly Howell's guided meditation is really good at getting you to relax. you can find her videos on youtube.

I think sleeping pills just prolong the issues.

I only get insomnia when my bg numbers are higher then they should be.

Before CPAP I could Sleep for 10 hours or more but now I am lucky to get 7 hours of sleep.

I don't suffer from insomnia, but my hubby does & is going on CPAP therapy hoping that will help. Can't hurt him, since he snores loud enough to wake the neighbors. I had a small period of time when I first started CPAP that I had trouble falling asleep. I planned a 'fall asleep' routine and that seemed to cure it. I used to watch something boring on TV (some old tape of a show I had watched a hundred times, like Andy Griffith show), set the timer on the TV for 1 hr, and would fall asleep within 30 min to 1 hr. Now I fall asleep without trying, reading my Kindle (yes, I have dropped it a few times too).

I hope this idea might help you,
Jen

Normally I don't have a problem with the therapy. It's just that very occasionally the pressure and exhalation will feel like it's too much and even turning it down or adjusting ramp time doesn't help. But even then, it's not really the therapy that's keeping me awake, it's something else that I can't put my finger on and because I'm not falling asleep quickly I start to notice the pressure more as it builds.

The problem is that since I started therapy, this seems to be happening far more frequently. Four nights in the last month instead of normally just one night every three or so months.
