Re: OT: Hostess Brands Liquidating
Without any knowledge of any impending catastrophe, my wife bought 1 box each of Ding Dongs, Ho Hos, & Twinkies.
Now, they can NOT be found anywhere. Wish she had bought more!
Still have most of each box.
Will have to ration what is left to ease the withdrawal pains.

I feel your pain big time. I was hurting badly yesterday until I consumed the dunkin donut to cover the withdrawal issues I was experiencing.StuUnderPressure wrote:Without any knowledge of any impending catastrophe, my wife bought 1 box each of Ding Dongs, Ho Hos, & Twinkies.

Re: OT: Hostess Brands Liquidating
As I commented in an earlier post, I don't like twinkies or donuts. But, when I'm having a sugar attack it's like someone who has to have a drink or a smoke. For me, it's usually ice cream... or lately, pumpkin pie with whipped cream. 49er... it does feel like withdrawal... because after I've consumed some junk, I actually feel better. Course I feel guilty at the same time.49er wrote:I feel your pain big time. If only the folks with sawdust for brains were as sweet and obliging and innocent as The Scarecrow! ~a friend~
Re: OT: Hostess Brands Liquidating
I confess. I've binged on sugar and on salt most of my life. For some reason unknown to me I just stopped craving so much sugar and so much salt. Occasionally some foods are actually too salty or too sweet for me the last 10 years or so.
My family still finds it hard to believe.
Mostly it is the too too sweet as companies add more and more sugar and/or other sweetener to their products. Mostly now when I crave something sweet it is for something more mildly sweet like banana nut bread. Unfortunately, now even the commercially made banana nut breads and equivalents are getting sweeter.
Ah, but that is the American way: the bigger the better, the more the better, excess, excess, excess.

Hope it takes a few months for production to ramp up again .... got an unopened box of Ding Dongs I'd like to cash in on ...
Where's Nobama with the handout??? Should be at least a $10B bailout. What, the taxpayer's money good enough for autos, not Twinkies????

I don't eat that stuff, rarely do I even have a soda or chips. If I want cake or donuts.....I make 'em...home made is the only way to go
I have never eaten ho-hos, twinkies or store bought stuff like that......they are one of the reasons that children (and adults) are overweight, the other reason is that they are too lazy to get out and take a walk

Why Hostess Had To Die
But who was ultimately to blame for the company failure? Here at Forbes, Leadership contributor Adam Hartung had a provocative piece on Sunday where he fingered management. In its most recent bankruptcy filing, writes Hartung, the company imposed “draconian cuts to wages and benefits.” This was unrealistic and damaging, he says, “tantamount to management saying to those who sell wheat they expect to buy flour at 2/3 the market price.” The company also kept trying to prop up its old business of obsolete products, failing to cook up more palatable foods with higher margins. Then it scapegoated the unions.
Today Forbes has a piece by Hank Cardello, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, and author of Stuffed: An Insider’s Look at Who’s (Really) Making America Fat. Cardello agrees with Hartung that Hostess management is to blame, for failing to alter its products amid dramatic changes in consumer tastes. Other junk food producers, including Coca-Cola and General Mills, have adapted and thrived.
Other writers, including Andrew Ross Sorkin of The New York Times, Holman Jenkins of The Wall Street Journal, and John Carney of CNBC, have described the inner financial dealings at Hostess and its relationship with its unions, as the reasons for the company’s demise.
etc.At the Journal, Holman Jenkins says that private equity is not to blame for Hostess’s demise. Rather, “the real story is the story of two unions, the Teamsters and the Bakery union of the AFL-CIO.” As Jenkins has it, though the Teamsters agreed to givebacks to finance the latest Hostess turnaround attempt, the Teamsters held onto work rules that would have driven the company into the ground. Examples: Drivers couldn’t help with unloading, and products like Wonder Bread and Twinkies were not allowed to ride on the same truck. Jenkins says the bakers decided to strike because bakery operations were efficient compared to the delivery process, and they didn’t want to prop up a Teamster contract that would eventually bring the company down.

-The economic cost of unions (determined by combining lost income and output over the period 1947 to 2000) exceeds $50 trillion, according to estimates by economists Richard K. Vedder and Lowell E. Gallaway.
-Unionization lowers incomes for all, albeit more in the relatively higher income states that on average have higher levels of unionization.
-A state with a 10 percent unionized work force can expect a 0.7 percent increase in its unemployment rate.
-For each four additional workers who become unionized, one less person works.
