Sheltering with CPAP

Post by archangle » Wed Oct 31, 2012 10:28 am

Has anyone ended up in an evacuation shelter with CPAP? Have you been able to get power for your CPAP? Any hints about how to do it?

Since OSA is not technically a 'disability', I would expect to get "blown off";
at least until after all the complaints about my LOUD snoring!

On Sunday night, the mayor of our town (Middletown CT) issued a notice that all persons with medical devices such as sleep apnea, oxygen machines, etc.... that think that they will lose power during the storm should report to the evac center.

In this case, the evac center is the high school gym. So I ran over and checked it out....

Cots, etc.. were provided.... you needed to bring your own pillows, bed linens, etc... Anyone with Sleep apnea or those with medical devices needing access to power were given cots that were fairly close to AC outlets.

I suspect that an extension cord or power strip would come in very handy.

Fortunately, we never lost power and did not need to take them up on the offer.

Tell the non-medical experts you need to go to the "special needs" shelter. If asked, tell them you need power for your "breathing machine" and point to your medical equipment bag, hopefully with an official looking tag on it. Don't be an ass, but be confident and polite. At worse, you don't end up with power for your CPAP.

The people doing most of the herding of people will probably have no idea what CPAP is.
