Depending on your water, most heated humidifiers will stink when the tank runs dry.

Even though the H5i still heats when dry, the air seems colder. I think maybe the aluminum bottom doesn't heat the air as well as the water does. Or maybe the lack of humididy makes it feel colder. Sort of like how humidity on a hot day makes it feel warmer.
