I joined the ranks of CPAP therapy at the end of August and I am very pleased with the results so far. I have REMstar Auto A-Flex with a System One Heated Humidifier and a heated tube. On this system I am able to humidify in two distinct ways:
1a) Heated Tube Humidification is ON
1b) Humidity Level setting is 1-3
1c) Tube Temperature setting is 1-5
OR
2a)Heated Tube OFF (necessary to get to System One Humidification on the Set-up)
2b) System One Humidification ON
2c) Humidifier settings 1-5
For the past four weeks I have tried setting as listed under 1a)-1c) with good results but machine was somewhat noisy, especially the latter part of the night as I got a stuffy nose.
For the past four nights I tried System One Humidification. The machine seems to be so much more quite in this mode, even with my stuffy nose. It uses much less water in setting 3, but I had a bloody nose. Our bed room humidity is currently 70%, which is not enough by itself to humidify my nose as I tried it.
My questions:
Does anyone have experience with the system as described above and if so what have you found are the advantage of one system over the other?
What are the main differences and therefore results between the two set-ups?

Re: Heated Tube Humidification on PR 560
It's honestly one of the most confusing, non-intuitive systems I have dealt with on my 560.
Higher numbers = supposedly more humidity (duh).
But with the Heated tube = 1-3
But non heated the dial goes from 1-5.
Huh? Why? So confusing.
I will give this point to the ResMed. Their system is far simpler to understand. Desired air temp levels are shown directly on the display. Easy.
From what I vaguely inderstand, on the 560, the 1-3 has something to do with degrees over the actual room temp. But it's unclear how many exactly. Alas there is no easy chart to refer to.
Because its relatively warm out now, I have gone back to the non-heated hose and will save the heated one for the dead of winter.
I know that if you shut off System One humidity control and use the old fashioned manual control system, the machine will manually heat the water up much higher, and give much higher humidity levels when cranked up. Some people may need this tropical level of humdity. If you use the System One humidity control option, the machine senses room temp and humidity and automatically regulates the humidifier temp as needed, so it will likely use less water each night. This may make some people feel their hose air is dryer (and should also prevent rainout).
PR really should do something to make this system more user friendly.
I pretty much just use 3 with the non heated tube and 1 or 2 with the heated tube and cross my fingers....
Regarding noise I don't think this issue should affect noise at all. My machine is virtually silent regardless of setting. If you are getting noises, call PR or your DME ASAP.

Re: Heated Tube Humidification on PR 560
The idea of the heated hose is to deliver adequate moisturized air and not have condensation in the hose (rain out is the term).
Highly annoying because it is loud and rather rude when it sprays water up your nose or on your face.
Some people need more moisture and some people need less moisture. Some people like warm bedrooms and some people like cold bedrooms. People that like lots of added moisture and cold bedrooms set themselves up for dealing with rain out especially in the winter months. Heated hoses are really nice for those people.
Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. Less chance of snorting water or getting a shower in the middle of the night or hearing a garbage disposal in your hose. It is truly amazing how much noise just a little bit of water in the hose will make.
I have used the System One Humidification system without the heated hose. It does use less water so it provides less moisture.
A setting of 3 using that system didn't give me enough added moisture. I needed a setting of 5. I like a cold bedroom and I have had the water up the nose thing and the garbage disposal in the hose. Really annoying.
Use whichever mode of operation that offers you the most comfort both in added nasal moisture and any perceived differences in sound though I don't see how the humidification choice can affect the machine noise but I won't argue to the point. There should not be any difference in machine noise. Play around with the various settings till you find one that suits your needs.
Everyone is different. There is no right or wrong when it comes to how you want to set things up. The only person who matters is yourself.
One other thing that I discovered with the System One Humidification system...even with the setting on 5 during the winter time with my preferred cold bedroom temps I experience "ice cube nose"....the air simply was not warm enough to be comfortable.
So even with a hose cozy over the hose to help prevent rain out, the air was uncomfortably cold on my nose (I use nasal pillow mask) and it actually woke me up. That was last winter and before the 60 series machines came out so I bought a stand alone heated hose. Best money I ever spent. No more ice cube nose. Then in Feb I bought the ResMed S9 machine which has a heated hose. I love it. I can get the added moisture I need without rain out and without the added weight of a hose cozy and I don't have ice cube nose with it either.
If you like your bedroom warm then the use of a heated hose may not be a great need. If you don't have any rain out and you sleep comfortably at the settings you choose and have adequate moisture there may not be any need for added warmth.
If your nasal mucosa is drying out to the point of bleeding then sounds like you need more added moisture. It doesn't really matter how you get it as long as you get it and are comfortable.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. Last night I tried setting 5, it felt I was back in the tropics. Turned it down to 4 and woke up with such a stuffy nose, that I was unable to breathe. I for one shall go back to set-up a listed under 1a-1c. It allows for more individual settings, not one size fits all.
