jaw drops and many leaks

Post by chuchmeister » Fri Sep 28, 2012 9:50 pm

I am still having a problem with my lips blowing open with my Quattro FX. I'm thinking about getting a Fisher-Paykel 432 or a F-P Forma. They look like they might help with my jaw dropping problem. Does anyone have any experience with either of these Fisher-Paykel masks? At my sleepy wits end!!

Forma is a supposedly better model than the other version. The FPs are good because their FF masks cup under the chin. Never used it however. My DME doesn't stock them.

Also check out the Hans Rudolph V2, the regular Mirage Quattro, and the FullLife. They each have features that are supposed to compensate for/help with jaw drop.

With a full face mask it doesn't matter if your lips blow open or your jaw drops, a ffm is for nose or mouth breathing ...doesn't matter. I do both, start off breathing through my nose, then as the night goes on my big yap opens and I am breathing through my mouth . I haven't tried any of the F&P masks, surely a couple of the folks here that use them will chime in shortly.
Good luck
Nan

my experience with the masks with the chin shelf is that during sleep if my chin dips towards my chest, the mask leaks out the bottom. i've pretty much given up on the idea, so i'm not looking for a fix, just saying it happens.

Nan is right...the FF mask is not intended to keep your mouth closed...it's purpose is to let you mouth breathe without losing therapy.

Go to the regular Mirage Quattro. I have a Quattro FX the DME sent me by mistake. It is flimsy. Nothing better than the Mirage Quattro full face mask for bad jaw drop.

You got bad jaw drop? Go to the Mirage Quattro FFM and tighten it down good except on the nose bridge dial. DONE!!

That is not entirely true. The regular Mirage Quattro has a built in feature that Resmed specifically claims handles jaw drop. It is the way the cushion is designed or something.

Mirage Quattro did nothing for my jaw drop. I slid right out of that sucker. The Hans Rudolph V2 is a bit bulky, but it has a much deeper chin cup than the F&P masks do. That worked well for me until I discovered that after two years of therapy my mouth finally stays closed at night and I could switch to a nasal mask.

I have been using the Quattro for over 3 years...I never noticed anything like that.

It's the flexibility of the large outer/lower cushion seal on the Mirage Quattro, Quattro FX, and which moves in and out with the jaw, if the jaw drops down/back. See "http://www.resmed.com/us/products/mirag ... nc=dealers"

Bons, judging from your photo you have an unusually wide lower jaw, perhaps that's why you slid out of your FFM.

Are you speaking from experience ..or..going by what you read? You are not using the Quattro according to your profile.

I have used a snorban dental device to help keep my mouth closed and my jaw in a forward position. The last time I bought one it was about $30 at http://www.snorban.com. If your jaw falls back it tends to close your airway which makes apnea worse. They even perform an operation called a glossical ?? advance for sleep apnea. It moves the jaw forward to help keep the airway open. You are better off to try to keep the jaw forward. I do not know if everyone can tolerate a dental device with a cpap mask but it helps.

Another mask that cups the chin:

This is a feature of the latest redesign. Older models stop at the crease below the lower lip.
