Neck Rash

Post by joelrk35 » Sat Sep 01, 2012 4:34 pm

I am using a RespCare hybrid mask and have developed a rash on the back of my neck where the head gear contacts the skin. I wash the headgear weekly. Has any one had the same problem and if so what have you done to alleviate it. I did see my Dermatologist who said it is probably contact dermatitis and gave me a cortisone cream which helped. However as soon as I stopped using the cream it came back. I don't want to use cortisone on going as there are side effects with steroids. Any input greatly appreciated.

II would try one of these--in the back.
Please note; not all fleece wraps fasten with velcro. These do:

OTH; this one might be just the ticket:

Thanks Chunky frog. I sent padacheek an email to see if they have something to fit my headgear

Joe, I've had the same issue with contact dermatitis on my scalp where the mask straps are. It's not a problem you hear about too often here, but you're not the only one. It's a tough one to get rid of because basically we keep irritating the skin every time we put the mask back on and sleep with it all night. I also find if I stop treating the condition it starts getting worse again. I'm trying to find another mask or two with straps in different places so I can rotate them and give the sore spots on my scalp a chance to air out. I don't want to keep using topical steroids forever. The liners should help, but they didn't solve my issue altogether because you still have some pressure and rubbing where the straps are, even with the liner. So far mask rotation is the best thing I can think of in addition to the liners.

I had the same problem on the back of my neck. I purchased the pad-a-cheek strap for my mask headgear. It's soft, so it brings comfort, and it also allows me to wash it on a regular basis. Once I used it the rash went away.

I was checking out an elbow brace today. It was also made of neoprene. It had a big warning on it that some people react to neoprene and to stop using it if you got a rash.

I'm a bit late with this, but I simply slip a feminine hygene minipad under the strap that contacts my neck. It works very well, and stays in place all night. May look funny, but nobody sees me when I'm sleeping!

I might add that my pressure is pretty high, 22/18, so I have to cinch down my headgear quite a bit to maintain a seal. The neoprene bands get stretched to the limit.

I love it! A man who's not afraid to show his "feminine" side.

I also have high pressure (20/18). I use pad a cheek on the sides, but also use a piece of old "jeans" belt carved down at the ends to fit into the pad a cheeks. By jeans belt, I mean a solid strip of leather with a smooth side and a rough side. (hang on a min. while I go get it and measure it)..............10" long......1,3/8 -1,1/2" wide. 6" out of the middle remain original width, and the 2" on each end get cut down to........7/8" wide to fit into the pad a cheeks. You need to chamfer (bevel) the narrow part from the smooth side of the leather (which will touch your skin) to make it a smother transition from the thickness of the leather to the normal headgear. the coarser leather faces outward and grips the headgear. This goes between the head gear and your neck. It kind of floats as far as up and down and side to side, but the pad a cheeks keeps it in place until you latch it on. You need to feel that the ends of the leather are outside of the pad a cheeks and centered up and down to protect your neck. Slide the pad a cheeks toward the mask if needed and Noodge the leather to where it needs to be! It could be that this is too long of a piece of leather for you, but you have the razor blade, so fix it a little at a time! Hang in there!

Do you prefer a new one or a slightly used one?
