Blue saliva morning after cpap therapy

Post by Illinifan91 » Sat Sep 01, 2012 2:35 am

Hello I am a 21 year old that is currently on CPAP therapy for the past month. I have seen in the past week that in the morning I will go to the bathroom and spit and my saliva is blue! Also my tounge has a blue coating to it but it is in no way completely blue from a lack of oxygen. I feel great when I use this machine but I am a bit concerned on what the problem could be. I use the Phillips comfort gel blue but I hopw that the gel is not coming off residually. Any help would be great. I also get sore throats in the morning as well but this like the saliva is only temporary maybe 5 min then it goes away.

That would freak me out!. How about washing the mask in sudsy water and see if the suds turn a bluish tint?
Personally I'd order a new mask. CPAP.com has a sale going on right now.

Hi!

I would first be wondering what I ate, drank last night. Beats, blueberries??

Then I would then be using a mirror to see what the inside of my mouth looks like. In my case I have a little camera with a great auto-focus macro with flash mode - wonderful pictures of inside the mouth and throat.

Only other thought - fungus, mould, bacteria. I know I hate to brush at night - I am suspicious I am not the only one?

FWIW

Is there a Smurf missing?
Seriously, the blue gel is sealed in a plastic bag heat sealed together.
Squeeze it and check for droplets oozing out near the seam

Just wondering if you use Listerine Mint (the worst offender) or other mouthwashes before bed or in the evening. They contain blue dyes typically and that dye can hang around in your mouth for quite a long time. I've noticed this myself, but never had it last all night!

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

OMG! there is dye in nearly everything!
Try avoiding dyes and food coloring, if you can.
Pity the kid who's allergic.
And stop chewing on your pen.

A longshot, but did you take Pepto Bismol last night? My second night on cpap I woke up and was mortified to see dark saliva and my tongue was also black -- I was ready to call paramedics when someone wrote in saying that Pepto Bismol can cause black tongue. Sure enough I had taken Pepto bismol the night before. You're saying blue, but I thought I'd respond in case it was a dark navy blue.

1. Check, as suggested here before, the blue gel from the mask is leaking. It is not difficult to have the soft plastic container to be cut or broken somewhere... I have no idea if that stuff is odorless and tasteless; do you have any taste of it at all?

2. Check you humidifier water container and tube thoroughly for any signs of fungus or algae growth.

3. Is user 'bluish' tint possibly 'greenish'? If you have developed sinusites, that could be the drainage from that. Some people on humidifier (without enough humidity or overy humidification) could develop sinusitis.

If I cannot locate the cause, I would consult your respiratory therapist or the doctor immediately --- since at least to me this is rather unusual. Good luck on finding the problem quickly.

Thank you all for the help everyone. It seems that using some antacids have given me some discolored saliva in the past couple days. It sucks being 21 with asthma acid reflux and sleep apnea. It seems that they all go together but from further investigation it seems that the antacids I use have bismuth in them which has caused my tongue discoloration. Thanks again everyone!

Bizarre. Thanks for posting this. Maybe it will help with the next person with smurf tongue.

Yep, Bismuth is the culprit -- turns your tongue a frightening furry black (or in the OP's case, with a bluish tinge ). I've used bismuth any number of occasions in the past and it never turned my tongue black, but something about being on cpap did it -- possibly because of keeping the mouth closed all night whereas pre-cpap I let my mouth drop open at night. By the way, you can take bismuth and avoid the discoloration by just brushing your tongue after you take it. I've tried it and it works like a charm.

Sorry it had to freak you out..

But it's a great story! Sort of like a CPAP ghost story

I have all three too so I feel your pain.

It is pretty funny, as long as you remember to cancel the ambulance.
