Airflow across my arm...

Post by jzehr39158 » Wed Aug 01, 2012 7:27 am

Love my CPAP, but have one tiny issue: the vent holes on the mask blow air on my arm or--worse yet--on the back of my wife's neck.

It's inconvenient to have to slip my arm into my pillow case to deaden the sensation of airflow across my skin.

Anyone have a fix for this?

I have the same issues. No good idea other than what NanWilson recommended. Sometimes, I swivel my hose to try an direct it differently or mush (highly technical term meaning to re-arrange a portion of a goose down pillow) my pillow to act as an air dam.

Don't cover the vent holes whatever you do! They are venting out CO2.

Wow! If that's your only issue you're way ahead of many of us. Congrats! I just use my hand to figure out exactly where the stream of air is blowing and adjust my pillow to compensate accordingly.

Keep a hand towel or scarf folded up on the corner of your bed. Apply as necessary.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I posted the same question a while back... and someone replied I was a bit nuts.

Anyway, I've learned to adjust my pillow or pull the comforter up and around my arm and shoulder.

Thanks for your replies. Seems like the best available advice is to cover my arm with a blanket or sheet. It's not an ideal solution and it's what I've been doing, but I hate having to rearrange my covers in the middle of the night if I shift positions.

Oh, well. There are worse problems to have.

Perhaps someone should invent a two-way hose, so the exhalations would be vented down near the CPAP machine...

1) Hanging my hose overhead often re-directs airflow to a less undesirable direction.
2) A small travel pillow can stand on edge between my exhaust and hubby's neck.
3) Long sleeves can be removed from an old winter t-shirt and worn with any nightie.
4) Smack the down comforter into a little dam to deflect the cold air from the sweetie pie's back.
5) Cry that I can't sleep with all these interruptions.

Wow... that's a damn good idea. I'm calling my patent attorney right now. Thanks for making me a millionaire.

Go for it. All I ask is that you let me be a beta tester.

Another thing you can do it take a THIN layer of gauze bandage, maybe 2 or 3 individual layers so you can easily see through the holes, and loosely tape it over the vent. I did that while I was adjusting to wearing the mask and now I don't need it. The gauze diffuses the escaping air just enough that it doesn't impinge on the bedding or pillowcase in a concentrated stream, and it's loose enough and diffuse enough that it doesn't cause any back pressure.

A THIN layer of cotton teased from a cotton ball will do the same thing. Don't know why the manufacturers haven't come up with a better exhaust diffuser. When the cat parks herself on my chest and breathes cat-breath in my face I just turn my head and blow some air on her. She gets the message and finds another place to perch for her back massage.

The Oracle 452 oral mask and some other F&P masks have a little fiber diffuser in the elbow that pretty much completely diffuses the air coming out of the mask. It tends to get wet and somewhat nasty and needs to be changed fairly often.

Exhaust from the Sleepweaver élan (and the other models, I presume)
is barely noticeable--the holes are so tiny, as I assume some air passes through the fabric in all directions.
