Am I the only wierd one?

Post by LilBuckaroo » Sat Mar 25, 2006 3:05 pm

I have and use (3) UltaMirage Full Face Masks. They are my only masks. The tech at my sleep study tried a nasal mask on me and it failed miserably. I have been a mouth-breather for the majority of my 58 years on this earth. I had a T&A when I was approximately 5 years old. An FF is the only one that I can use and breathe with. I have a year-round stuffed up nose. I have not been to an allergist and doubt that I ever will go to one.

I don't think it's weird to be content to use a FF mask every night. If it's working well for you, then more power to you. But I do think it's weird that the year-round stuffed up nose doesn't bother you enough to see an allergist!

Our story is almost the same, except I am 60, and a lot more wore down than you.

I had the T&A at the same age, they must have been running a special on that.

I started CPAP 8 months ago, with a COMFORTFULL FF Mask, I just got a new F&P Flexifit431 yesterday and used it last night for the first time.

I like it, it leaked a little into the eyes, but I got it adjusted better, it seemed to seal a little better. The leak rate went to avg of 45 the old mask was 41. With the hose off it is easier to breath. The headgear is much better.

I used to have allergies twice a year but for the past year is every night, bummer....

With the new mask my AHI doubled to 2.7, I'm hoping it's just to getting used to it, it is much quieter, I rate it 4 1/2 Stars on the FF Mask scale. Jim

No i do not believe you are weird. i also use a face mask because i am a mouth breather. When i fall asleep my jaw relaxes and i breathe through my mouth. i have tried the nasal mask but feel like i am suffocating even though i can breath through my nose for a short time.

when you have a year-round stuffed up nose, you have no reason to think it's not normal i.e. the way everyone is.

it's been a very long time since i've seen an allergist, maybe 30 years, but then they wanted to sign me up to a lifetime of visits and shots. no thanks.

FWIW:

There's been a lot of development in allergy treatments in the last years.

A friend of mine and her daughter have been signed up for three years of shots which immunize you against whatever it is that you're alleric to. Three years, and thats that. According to my friend, it's worth it. Her daughter, now 11 and a half and nearing the end of her treatment no longer has asthma attacks.

I don't wear a ff mask, but I do have a stuffed up nose all year round. The funny thing is that I lived my first 21 years in Oregon. I moved to California at that time and have been stuffed up ever since = 43 years now.

I started taking Actifed (back when it was a prescription drug) and even though I've tried many medications, nothing works better than Actifed. I take 2 a day and function very well. I do occasionally see an ENT, but have never particularly wanted to subject myself to all the skin tests to see just what I'm allergic to.

Another funny thing is that I got married to Bob at the same time I moved to Calif - and if I'm allergic to him, I don't want to know it. ....

LilBuckaroo and Goofproof:

If you want to try new things, you probably can do Swift and sometimes do Activa. I'm best with full-face because i naturally mouthe-breathe. But need to clear myself out with saline or ayr if i use swift or activa.

i like activa's soft, squooshy feeling and i like the swift feeling of not having a lot on my face. but if i just don't want to bother with the clearing out stuff, full face is fine.

i don't know whether it's allergies or my deviated septum that stuffs me up more.

the last few weeks i've had a more clear nose than i've ever had in my life because of the ayr etc. a clear nose is a very different feeling but not one i have to have.

also, i'm with you, linda. all that testing stuff and the medications and whatever is too much bother. most of the skin tests when i did it came up positive but then they wanted to do more, and who cares? i don't feel bad.

the main reason i'm doing cpap is because without it, i can easily sleep through a weekend, i've missed a few law classes because i can oversleep through any set of alarms, and i'm tired from nothing when i get home from law school. (my apnea is mild, but my snoring is horrendous, and the sleep study said i sleep forever but don't get any rest.) since i've started to do cpap this time around, i've noticed that i need less sleep once i got rid of some of the bugs that were driving me insane.

If the perpetually stuffed up nose involves chronic sinus infections, I would go back to the ENT and try to treat it. Sinus infections can be dangerous. I found several-times-daily sinus rinses to do the trick.

If it wasn't for us weird's, the normals wouldn't be able to set any standard for themselves, they would have to share our weirdness.

gidgie--

what is weird about one machine, one mask, and a host of sensitivities? getting back to the original post, what is weird about using only UMFF and having a year-round stuffed nose? imo, none of this is weird.
