lips blow open
I have a Mirage Swift II nasal pillow mask and my BIPAP levels are 12/8. I use a chin strap to keep my mouth closed but the pressure I'm at keeps blowing my lips open and all the air pressure just goes out my mouth. I've even tried a full face mask but they start leaking badly late in the morning when I start sweating. Open to any suggestions.
Re: lips blow open
Go back to a full face mask but get a mask liner...check out padacheeks.com, Karen is a patient here and makes all kinds of good stuff for us. The mask liner will wick away the sweat quite nicely.

Re: lips blow open
I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions here. No matter how tightly you have your chin strap, your lips will still blow open. Several people have success with taping their lips (do a search on taping lips), some switch to full face masks and various other solutions. I was able to get my deluxe chin strap to come up over my lips and it stopped the blow out. Then it got hot so I put a cotton bandana over my mouth and it worked fine as long as I could loop it through the back of my Opus 360 mask. Then I read someone on this forum said you could train your tongue to stay on the roof of your mouth while sleeping and prevent blowouts. I didn't believe it at first but the person who said it is very knowledgeable and I figured if she suggested it I would try it. Lo and behold, it worked so now I am able to sleep with my Swift FX nasal pillows and not have blowout. I would lie awake with my mask and work on being able to keep my tongue in place and dissipating the bubbles and so far so good. It's been about a week now that I've been able to do this.

Re: lips blow open
Pad a Cheek's mask liners will also make the remaining leakage much quieter.
As long as the leak rate is within reason, you can still sleep without being awakened by a solo on the bassoon.

I like taping my mouth closed, but there are some caveats. For details, click on my member name and go to the fifth and sixth pages of my recent posts and you'll see lots of my suggestions, plus , included in those threads, are many other helpful tips that other members have added. As others have suggested, you can do a search for "mouth taping" on this site. I feel this practice is totally safe, but some members will rant and rave while they shower you with criticism. It's just part of being a 'taper', you get used to it.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Re: lips blow open
I forgot to add to my earlier post (and BTW, that someone you mentioned was Pugsy): A few nights last month I forgot to tape my mouth closed when I went to bed. Subsequently I noticed thru the night that I'didn't have any blow-outs or chipmunk cheeks, plus I didn't wake up with a dry mouth. Now, my great hope is that I am training my tongue to be an obedient appendage and stay in it;s proper place, ie. firmly sealed against the top of my palate. (Do I give a tongue a tongue lashing if it reverts to it former misbehavior? I don't know, that sounds too weird to contemplate).Maxie wrote: Then I read someone on this forum said you could train your tongue to stay on the roof of your mouth while sleeping and prevent blowouts. Re: lips blow open
Several forum members have been able to train the tongue to stay in position so that it blocks the air from trying to enter the mouth from the airway.
Taping the mouth without the tongue blocking the door is just going to cause chipmunk cheeks and while not harmful...it is highly annoying and guaranteed to spoil your sleep.
I think Janknitz was able to train her tongue to stay in position. I never had much trouble with the tongue but I did have trouble with mouth dropping open so I did tape for a couple of months. For the most part my mouth stays shut. Might have a few minor slip ups but nothing horribly bad long enough to really hurt things much.
We can learn new habits . It just seems like the good ones are hard to learn but the bad habits are so darn easy to create.

Re: lips blow open
I have a nose mask. I had always been pretty much a mouth breather. But with the mask, if I open my mouth it feels funny so I seem to have no problems keeping my mouth closed. I believe I mostly use the tongue on the roof of the mouth method. However I notice this morning that every once in a while I have what I would call a mouth fart...blowing out a small bubble of air. But this doesn't seem to cause any problem in leakage.
