Data from my AutoScan

Post by alphabettie » Sat Mar 25, 2006 7:28 am

I have listed my data from the past month or so concerning AHI. My apneas are not so bad, I think. The Hypopneas are too high. While when my AHI is about 7 or lower I feel pretty good. I use a Resmed Vantage set from 10 to 20 and the median averages about 13 and the 95th is about 16.2. I have virtually no leaks reported and under .2 when I do. My question is should I go to doctor and find a way to resolve the hypopneas. He told me before that the algorithm was the reason and that I should ignore them. I am finding a correlation. Bottom line: I feel pretty good most of the time. I am tired on high hypop days but can do my work and function. I would like to get this under 5 because I think I can do and feel better. Any suggestions?
My masks include (I love them all on certain days): swift, nasalaire II, aura headset, and least favorite but not hated, breeze.

Note: these are from the same days; my chart did not convert very well.

Hi Alphabettie,

What is the mask selection you are using on the machine for the other mask from different makes? Was there any difference in the AHI reading as a whole on different masks? I do find that some masks tend to have better reading than others. The leak reading does vary depending on what mask selection you set on the machine. There maybe others ideas as well. _________________

The median means that you spend half your time at or above it. Since you feel a correlation with the results, and since in some cases, the algorithm is such that it will not raise pressure in response to hypopneas, it it were me, I would consider raising the bottom pressure closer to the median. That will of course change the median pressure (by definition...) and might eliminate some of those bothersome hypops.

Gee, thanks, OZ for fixing my table. I keep the Vantage set on Swift for all my nasal masks. I notice that my apnea index comes in lower with the nasalaireII and the aura headrest, but it is not a major difference.

So my titration was set at 12. I could up the lower number to what....11 or 12? I looked at my data and I hardly ever go below 11.6 when I am sleeping. One thing I do notice is that I put the mask on for 45 minutes before I go to bed while watching a little tv or reading. It will register hypopneas during that time too. Not many, like three or so. I just think that is weird.

I really am reluctant to complain in that I have no acid reflux, blood pressure has become normal, and I feel relaxed most of the time. I sleep 8 hours straight and that is a vast improvement on all counts. I started early December and feel so lucky to have my life back. I nap only on the weekend with apap but sometimes I do not need a nap.

I have the older S7 auto and do not have Swift selection but I use the Mirage setting. One thing I that surprise me was that your titration was 12 the machine set bottom is 10, the median is 13 but the 95th is about 16.2 that quite a range of pressure changes during night. I thought that my own pressure curve looked like a mountain!

Under the circumstances, it sounds reasonable to have your lower pressure near where you were titrated originally.

ALpha:

I have a similar situation with my Remed Auto. I couln't sleep last night so I just laid there for 4 hours and when I checked my data this morning I had a bunch of snores and Hypop's while I was awake. Also my pressure stayed mid range veenthough I was awake !!

I think we need to take the data with a certain grain of salt. After all it is an alogarithm, not a specific hook-up like at the Sonnogram.

The data may be somewhat misleading. I think it's great you are sleeping well and that you feel good.

I agree and I have to remind myself of this all the time. Like this morning, for isntance. My Resmed APAP reported 3 apneas/hour (which is perfectly believable given the results of my titration study) but also 17 hypopneas/hour which just seems terrible. I tossed and turned part of the night and fought a leaky mask for a while early on but when I did sleep it was quite restful and I felt OK today. Those "hypopneas" may or may not have been OSA events but I don't believe my sleep apnea was all that much worse than the several nights before when it reported 9-11 hypopneas/hour.
