Dehumidifier water

Post by jabman » Mon Jul 16, 2012 4:47 pm

I am wondering if the water that comes out of a dehumidifier is distilled and if it is Can I use it in my cpap machine?

I bought a small dehumidifier this weekend and my wife asked me this question.

While technically you could call it distilled, you won't find me using it. IF you must reuse it put it in your fish tank.

Have you looked at the gunk collected on the coils of a room dehumidifier? You must be nucking futs!

If distilled water is too expensive in MN...come to WI it's under $1 gallon.

A dehumidifier takes water out of the air...the air is dirty. Do you ever notice dust in your house? Do you want that in your lungs?

I just use the water from our filter in the kitchen. When I clean the tank each week there is minimal gunk in the tank.

@ GumbyCT
I posted this question to satisfy my wife, I tryed to tell her that it probably was not a good idea but she wanted me to find out.

@ LSAT While Distilled wated is not that expensive in MN and when I do buy it I get about 5 to 8 gallons, it is nice to know it is cheep in WI. I live only about 5 miniutes from Wisconson.

Thanks for you replies-- I will not be using the dehumidifer water.

I guess I am supposed to be worldly enough to already know this answer --- but lately, driving down the road, I've seen several large signs on properties advertizing "POOL WATER". What the heck is this?

Distilled no. Stilled yes.

Don't use it. Its very high in metals. Your plants will love it.

If you disagree, will your pet dirnk it?

Two words: Legionella.

Yeah, I know that's only one word. Remember the outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease was traced to the water in a cooling tower. Water that condenses off of cold surfaces like in room dehumidifier evaporator coils carries a high load of dust and dirt. Dust and dirt carry a high load of bacteria and fungal spores which can begin to grow when they reach the right environment, like your lungs.

Don't chance it.

That reminds me of someone on another internet forum who admitted he drank the water from his room dehumidifier.

Scary place that internet.

I just can't believe how often this topic comes up. Distilled water just makes sense. Dumping it every morning doesn't but don't we all eventually realize that?

It,s cheeper at WalMart. My wife was looking for a cost saving method but after telling her that the Dehumidifew water is considered Gray Water she is willing to bite the bullet and buy Distilled water.

I've read recently that water from air conditioner condensation is not good for plants. So I would not even think about putting water from a dehumidifier near my head as in my humidifier, I wouldn't even put it on my plants.

I have a small sump pump for the condensation from my AC. I have to clean the little reservoir occasionally or it clogs the hose and spills out on the basement floor. It's a thick slime. Not in my body!
