Recently diagnosed

Post by inyourdreams » Fri Jul 13, 2012 11:11 am

I went for my sleep study on July 3rd and just got the results yesterday. The results was not surprising as I had suspected for 2+ years that I had sleep apnea -- just refused to admit it. I go back for my "fitting" on CPAP equipment in a week. Get to spend another night all wired up but with the CPAP equipment. Technicians have been super nice and very supportive. Even told me that after my next visit, I should wake up refreshed. I do hope so. I am apprehensive about all of this, but I realize that it will improve my quality of life. I just feel embarrassed and ashamed that I have this. Don't know why, but I will deal with it. I have been reading posts throughout this site and I am so glad to have discovered your forum. Reading different posts here has given me hope and I know that going into this process with a positive attitude will make a difference in the outcome. Good to know that I can come here with questions (and I am certain I will have many).

1. WELCOME

2. All technicians say that, but the reality is everyone is different and everyone responds differently to therapy. My sleep tech told me I'd feel like a million bucks the next morning. Um, no. That's not how it went (for ME). It takes some longer than others to feel the difference. Not trying to be a debbie downer here. I'm just trying to inform you so that you're not left wondering what's wrong IF you don't wake up feeling as they said you would. That's not a great feeling at all. It is all connected into that web of crap spun from DME's and doctors alike: "If it's not working it must be YOU". That is so untrue it isn't even funny. You can do everything right and still have a while for adjustments until you feel better. Just be prepared mentally for that

3. NEVER be embarrassed or ashamed of your xPAP therapy. It most definitely will improve your quality of life. Anyone close to you wants you to be better (at least those who truly care). If you're single, that just adds intrigue to who you are! (Feel free to insert bad taste joke about Star Wars related bedroom games)

Again, welcome aboard and I hope I did not ruffle your feathers or offend.

I felt better the very first time. I have been fatigued for a couple of years. If I get 5 good hours on the hose I am good to go. I struggledcwith the mask for while but got great support from this site. It is a change in your life fr the better.

Some night when I feel tired of sleeping with the mask I think of how bad I will feel in the morning and on it goes. Good luck.

I HOPE you are among the group who feel great after that first night and never look back. I think I helps to know, however, that for many the transition to apap is a struggle that takes tenacity, patience, and all sorts of other admirable character traits! If you are struggling with not feeling well on the hose, it doesn't help to have the additional weight of dashed expectations, with no explanations. I'm tolerating it now, for which I am grateful, but it felt like a long time coming.

Welcome to the forum, which has for me been the difference between making my apap work and not. Sympathy, guidance with data acquisition and analysis, and practical tips.
