Front upper teeth numb and loose

Post by DoodleBug » Thu Jul 05, 2012 8:08 am

Hi, I am new here but have done some searching already about this problem. I have been on a cpap for over 2 years now. I am using a Resmed S9 currently with a ResMed Mirage Active LT mask. For a least a year now I have noticed in the morning that my top front 8 teeth, front going 4 each way... feel numb and are actually getting loose. This is disturbing. I have tried wearing my mask in different positions. I have tried a nasal pillow but the numbness happens with this too. I have tried the SleepWeaver, which "could" be a nice mask if they could work out some bugs. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I could see the Activa doing something like that to your teeth. But most nasal pillows should not ... the forces needed to maintain a seal are just not in the right direction to push against your teeth in any significant way.

I use the Swift LT but there are many other good pillow types.

Anyway, welcome.

Although the problem may indeed be caused by your mask, you need to see a dentist about this problem. You also need the dentist to be on the same page as the sleep doc, so I would also suggest the sleep doc send the dentist a copy of the relevant medical records before your appointment with the dentist. And the dentist should also keep the sleep doc in the loop both his diagnosis of the tooth problem and its treatment.

Meanwhile..you could try a FF mask which wouldn't touch your upper teeth. The FF mask would press on your lowers...depending upon how tight you make the straps.

Assuming that you meant Resmed Mirage Activa and not Active then I have a similar mask, I think, with my Mirage SoftGel Nasal mask. I have only ten natural teeth left in my mouth. The rest are in one upper and one lower removable dentures. I need to wear my upper denture during sleep. Otherwise, the mask presses over the upper lip and on a cavity below it which causes leaks. To reduce the pressure on my upper lip (where the mask rests) I loosen the mask straps almost completely and the mask stays hugging my nose base with no leaks. The chinstrap helps holding the mask stable. I wonder if I could do it with the Activa? I assume that I could wear a night guard made of plasic, instead or over my upper denture. My ultimate solution would be to uproot the rest of my teeth and put in implants, costing some $50K.

I had the same problem with my Mirage Micro.
I had been pushing it down to avoid a sore spot on the bridge of my nose,
and the bottom hit too low anyway. This was the tipping point.
I changed masks as soon as I could get my doc to write a
prescription for an emergency off schedule mask--which insurance covered,
due to my dental problem with the Micro.
Turns out I fall BETWEEN sizes for most Re$Med masks.

I had sore upper teeth with the activa and switched to the softgel. It is not as bad but still presses.

I used the ACTIVA for a couple of years before switching to the SoftGel (both use the same frame and headgear), now going on 2 years. Never had any issues like you describe.
