A Rise Time of 5 may be good if he has restrictive issues. Otherwise, A Rise Time of 3 may provide better results for obstructions. The Ramp parameter (like humidifiers) is a feature designed for sissies and other girlie men. He may enjoy disabling Ramp.-SWS wrote:That sounds more comfortable. You can experiment with this parameter while lying awake and rested. It's primarily a comfort feature, although some doctors will use quicker rise times to help mechanically offload the work of breathing (WOB).WW3 wrote: Reset Rise Time to 5.

Re: May Have Bought the Wrong ASV Machine?
Thanks for adding that, Banned. I think the pulmonary issues for that rule-of-thumb were devised primarily for lower versus upper airway disorders. My understanding is that rule-of-thumb refers to "obstructive" disorders with COPD and obesity hypoventilation in mind, and "restrictive" disorders with neuromuscular disease and chest-wall deformity in mind. Thus restrictive lower-airway disordered patients tend to prefer rise times between 3 and 6; obstructive lower-airway disordered patients tend to prefer rise times between 1 and 4.Banned wrote: A Rise Time of 5 may be good if he has restrictive issues. By contrast, obstructive apnea patients (w/disordered upper airway) often prefer longer rise times. That's not an issue in spontaneous mode. In any event, experimentation with that parameter while lying awake and rested should be adequate for WWW3 to figure out what works best for him.

You and avi should team up. Both of you could author the "Manly" method of xPAPing...Banned wrote:...The Ramp parameter (like humidifiers) is a feature designed for sissies and other girlie men. He may enjoy disabling Ramp.

I was really bummed because of the BiPAP failure. The help and advice I have received here has been a Godsend. I got lucky finding this machine and this site. I may actually sleep tonight!
Teaches me a lesson though. Get a back-up machine!

I see you've already got it working, but for future reference on Legacy Resmed humidifiers:WW3 wrote:BTW< what do I need to hook up the humidifier? It has a short two-prong, female pigtail. Seems there should be an extension that would have a regular plug on the other end for plugging into a wall receptacle.
Unplug the power cord from the back of the blower, plug it into the humidifier. Plug the pigtail from the humidifier into the power connector on the back of the blower where you took the power cord out of.
