OT: Low Carb and Pain Reduction

Post by Lizistired » Sat Jun 23, 2012 12:01 am

Yeah, nobody wants to read another low carb thread......
But I noticed several other members commenting in the other threads about a reduction in pain after lowering carbs.
Mine has been dramatic and I'm curious how common this is and if anyone has an opinion on what the offender is.
I know if I eat at a restaurant or at a friends house I have flare ups, even when I think I was careful. (I need to ask my sister in law how she makes her burgers?? )
Please post if you have noticed a reduction in pain with changing your diet.
I think something is causing the inflammation, I just don't know what.
Is it sugars, grains, starches, additives, ............????????

1000% reduction in pain. I think it's the grains because the pain wasn't gone until I eliminated them completely, although the pain was much reduced with low carb alone. Dr. Davis claims its not just gluten but also gliadin in grains (especially wheat) that is the culprit. I know when I cheat Imy pain levels come back for a few days.

I sure wish I could convince my niece. She has fibromyalgia and the quacks treating her told her to avoid meat and eat plenty of carbs with her escalating pain meds. Grrrr!

curious...what kind of pain...where is it located...was it brought on by an injury or arthritis or something else?
what level of pain 1-10?
I deal with pain on a regular basis from worn out joints in my feet and shoulders...a type of arthritis...from construction work and sports
I too would love to hear some success stories specifically about the reduction in pain
thanks

Jan you are probably right about the grains.
I ate at my brother's twice last week and had to get my cane out because my hip pain put me out of commission. I sure don't miss that.
I ate 2 slices of fried green tomatoes(flour), a really dry lean low fat burger(seasoning), a brat(additives), and green beans w/ham(seasoning). You just don't know what you are eating unless you cook it yourself. I think I will try making fried green tomatoes with pork rinds because I really miss the ones my grandma used to make!
The worst part was watching my brother hobble around with his back pain and joint stiffness. Can't tell him anything though.

Hip, back, knees, shoulders, elbows....
Excruciating hip pain that makes impossible to pick your foot up or put it down. It would come out of the blue and be incapacitating. I would blame it on something I had done or over-done.
I always attributed it to injuries and arthritis, barometric pressure, aging...

Count me in on the pain reduction club. Before eliminating ALL grains/sugars and frankinfoods, it would take me several minutes to be able to stand up straight after sitting for a while...had to let the pain in my lower back/hips subside before I could really stand up straight. It made me feel SO old and decrepit....moving around hunched over for a few minutes after standing up. I had also pretty much given up knitting much because of carpal tunnel pain (had CT surgery done in the 80s too) --I could only knit for a few minutes at a time before my hands/wrists/arms became too painful.

I hadn't knit at all for a couple of years and I've been completely grain/sugar free since January 2012. In the past week I've been knitting up a storm and knitting for hours at a time with NO PAIN. Yippee! I'm grateful cuz I'm recovery from breast cancer surgery and it's turning out to be a slow, long haul. At least the doc says knitting is one thing I CAN do.

Thank you for the reminder. I have osteo arthritis and fibromyalgia and I was pain free when I gave up bread. I have slipped on the low carb dieting in the last while (I seem to slide back into being a pig without full awareness) and was actually blaming my pain on our rainy month. duh.

Back to low carbing. Thanks Liz.

Anyone have any recommendations for books to help with this?

I wonder how well green tomatoes would GRILL.
I love grilled asparagus, mushrooms, onions, even brussels sprouts.

Well, count me in BIG TIME, Janknitz I was told a few weeks ago by my new or should I say A new PCP, she told me to get off all fat and meat, and for the past 3 weeks I have gained weight, ache all over, and feel like C_ _p. Elle, I am in the same boat with ya. Starting all over again with the LCHF, and it is way harder the 3rd time around. I begin with a new PCP on July 2, so I am hoping this one will be more in tune with my health needs.

OMG, Portie, I accidentally hit the spam and eliminated your post! Please forgive--small screen on my iphone. I hit the no thanks button on the spam thing, but then accidentally went back to that screen and eliminated it. My bad!!!!

Portie was asking if there really is a connection between low carbing and reduction in pain, and whether it was just low carbing or it was elimination of grains.

Again, I am SO sorry, did not mean to eliminate your post!!!!

And, in response to "what kind of pain?", in my case it was skeletal pain. All over with some joints really bad--my doctor attributed it to aging and osteoarthritis.

I wasn't able to knit any longer either--each stitch was like a grinding in my left shoulder. I can knit again, although I don't knit for hours and hours any more as I used to (and because my back, hips and knees feel so much better I can do other things instead).

Dr. William Davis of Wheat Belly claims that eliminating grains helps all forms of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and many other causes of pain. The reports of people who eliminate grains, especially wheat, bear this out.

The way I look at it, it takes only a week or two to see phenomenal results. If you try it (and as pointed out, you must scrupulously avoid ALL forms of grain that may be hidden in processed foods and other people's cooking) you will know if it's working or not. It's free--you don't have to buy anything, and if it doesn't work for you (if you are CERTAIN you haven't ingested any grains), no harm, no foul. Go back to eating grains andd have a happy life.

Note that it's not just the gluten in grains that is an issue. So going "gluten-free" is not the same thing. Replacing gluten with other carby substances like tapioca and rice flour will not have the same benefits.

No, I wasn't asking if low carb has an impact on pain, I know it does. Jan, like your niece, my or should I say A new PCP told me to get off all meat and fat. Now three weeks in I feel like C _ _p, and like Elle I have to begin all over again which I am dreading. I have an appointment with another PCP July 2nd, and I am hoping she will be more on target with me.
It sure is hard the 3rd time around, and I think that when this thread died last time it was hard for me to remain on the LCHF journey. With all the other OT's on this site, the LCHF, is needed since it directly affects cpap, for me an many others JMHO.

I'm coveting my bread today and will start tomorrow. After one day of low carb I am back on track but it is hard to start. Carbs are so easy. I could live on toast.

Hi - I feel very backward, have not heard about this at all, but if I can bring myself to actually do it for any length of time I will - just don't know how I'll give up daily Mr. Noodles + mini meatball (or 1 Plain Jane chicken nugget) and frozen veg handful... such a staple for me!
