PROBLEM WITH SLEEPYHEAD

Post by máirtín » Tue Jun 19, 2012 11:01 pm

For the past couple of days Sleepyhead has been crashing when I try to import data.
How do I report this to the developer?

if it just started crashing after working properly previously, it's likely not a sleepyhead problem. you could try setting your operating system back to a date when it did work properly in case a newly installed program or a windows update is causing the problem. if it is a sleepyhead problem it would be easy enough to uninstall and reinstall it.

Here's one simpler test to do before that: Try moving the SleepyHeadData folder somewhere else, and then run SleepyHead. On Windows, it should be in your "My Documents". If it is SleepyHead, repeated failures might relate to a corrupt SleepyHeadData.

If that does not fix it, it is very unlikely to be SleepyHead, and I would agree with restoring the operating system back to the way it was the last time SleepyHead worked.

I'm not looking to solve the problem - I have no ability to do that.
I simply want to report the problem so that the developer can figure out what to do.

Bug and problem reporting instructions are at the main sourceforge page for SH.
The developer is taking time off to take care of some personal health issues at the moment. So don't expect speedy anything.
What you are describing is not a common occurrence and if related to your computer only then there may not be anything he can do anyway but go ahead and do the bug report.
Link for SH is in my signature..just back up to the main page for bug reporting.

The bad news is that, without some more data, the developer will be very unlikely to figure it out. I have the SleepyHead source code on one of my computers and have a lot of experience with software debug, but would have no idea where to start on this. It is very unlikely to be fixable unless you take some steps to collect more data.

The good news is that several of the forum members are computer experts, and if you follow some of our suggestions you may be able to help fix the bug by collecting good data. You do have the ability to contribute to solving the problem. We may also be able to help you get SleepyHead working again for you.

If moving or renaming your existing SleepyHeadData folder were to fix the problem, I would give you instructions for wrapping up the existing data so that it can be examined to find out what is wrong with it. If restoring the operating system back to when SleepyHead last worked, it would mean incompatibility between SleepyHead and something that was installed or changed since then.

Perhaps trying the vendor approved software, Rescan, could shed some light. If it balks as well could indicate that it is NOT a SH problem, but bad data or some other issue. If it loads the data and displays it properly "the point is mute" as Jesse Jackson said one night on SNL.

This may be pretty far out but while researching EDF file format I ran into Polyman
Our EDF(+) checker/viewer Polyman for WinXP-7
http://www.edfplus.info/downloads/downloads.html. It may be able to indicate what is wrong or at least show some of the data.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
I figured out how to make a bug report.
