Tinnitus anyone?
Tinnitus anyone?
Has anyone else developed tinnitus either with their sleep apnea or with being on PAP treatment?

Re: Tinnitus anyone?
No.
I have had it for several years BH (before hosing); one side only as a result of a childhood infection.
Cpap has had no effect either way in my case,
The gentle machine sound is a welcome distraction when I remove my hearing aid at night.

I had it before cpap. CPAP hasn't affected it either way. I agree with chunkyfrog. I like the machine noise as a distraction.

Re: Tinnitus anyone?
I get mild Tinnitus off and on because of a serious case of 'surfer's ear'. I've had it for the last several years, but it isn't too advanced, tho it is annoying. Here's a cut and paste from another thread that I posted. I hope it helps:
"I like a baseline of white noise enhanced with a babbling creek soundscape in the background... oddly I don't much like either alone, however together they are really soothing. For the babbling creek I've got a cheapo sound machine I bought at RiteAid fifteen years ago (still works fine) and for the white noise I've got an old 12volt CCrane radio from S. Africa. That has an obsolete TV channel band, but since the FCC killed that broadcast band and stole the frequencies for the military,it's now just a bunch of pure white noise, mostly of the AM radio style, ie. a so-called brown noise (more of a low pitched tone, which I like).
These choices work good for me, but I think any natural sounds generator from Sharper Image or Radio Shack will do the trick for most people. Oh, by the way, there's are THREE SCHOOLS across from my house, so at 7:00am the traffic noise and screaming is terrible... therefore on weekdays my sound escape gets cranked to the MAX!!!

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: Tinnitus anyone?
When I sit here and read this thread and focus on the ringing in my ears it drives me nuts. I also had it from before CPAPing. Walmart sells a white noise generator for about $10. I should have bought one long ago. Here is some info about Tinnitus for anyone to comment on.
IMO, Tinnitus, is loss of hearing, the tone frequency that I hear is the one that has the largest loss in my case. My brain makes up for that by generating the missing tone. If I listen to a sound generator that replicate that frequency I then stop hearing the ringing.
Having Sleep Apnea, Diabetic Foot Peripheral Neuropathy, BPPV (Benign Positional Vertigo), etc., all indicate that your Vestibular system went kaput.

Re: Tinnitus anyone?
Just the last few months I've developed a high pitched tone in my ears that's pretty consistent in that it's every morning upon waking and lasts about an hour or so. Not sure what the difference is since I've been on CPAP for several years, but it is related either to CPAP or sleeping somehow. Hasn't been bothersome enough to seek treatment.

Re: Tinnitus anyone?
Just wanted to put the notion out there that it might be worthwhile to try to change the way you relate to the tinnitus sound experience. Just as the most successful cpappers found a way to become genuinely friendly with their machines, it is not out of the realm of possibility to get on good terms with the tinnitus ring. When I go walking in the early mornings, I deliberately tune-in to my own omnipresent tone and cultivate awareness to it. I find it soothing.

Re: Tinnitus anyone?
Since my tinnitus is related to monaural hearing loss, I have found great relief in wearing a hearing aid.
Since I have one 'good' ear, I go for the best aid I can afford for the bad, ringing ear, for the closest match.
My current instrument is a Phonak Solana micro P BTE.
I am so glad I didn't fall for the lousy crap that is heavily advertised and marketed directly to the public.
These crummy excuses usually end up in storage, like a lot of sorry brick cpaps.
(end of rant)

Thanks for the feedback -- Jimbob, I like your approach to dealing with it. I'll work on that.

I'm not a doctor. It's my personal opinion.
Re: Tinnitus anyone?
It's essentially a metta practice, so the way in is with gentleness and open-heartedness. Smiling can help activate the right emotions. Or--and this sounds crazy--think of the sound like its in need of your friendship. It's lonely, you see, everyone else treats it like an enemy. And it's loyal. It's always there for you. When you are feeling stressed, you can rest in it, and the thinking mind will slow down and become calm.kaiasgram wrote:Thanks for the feedback -- Jimbob, I like your approach to dealing with it. I'll stop now before they send the white-coated gentlemen to fetch me. But it works for me.

My wife says that I ignore things she says so I just ignore my tinnitus.

I have had it so long that I just ignore it. I use a white noise machine to sleep. My was caused by jet Aircraft noise and excedrin.
