Do you really think it was blood? From my experience, even dried blood becomes more red when reconstituted with liquid. That is just the strangest thing! Were you aware of a taste, odor or texture? If your water chamber, hose and mask were clean, it had to come from the cpap machine itself, one would think. I believe you have handled this admirably! I would have freaked out!

Oh, don't think I didn't freak out!!! This last month has been one long freak out, and the black stuff put me over the edge. I thought the same thing you did about the dried blood turning more red when in contact with water. I have a feeing I'll never know what that was, but at least it did NOT happen again this morning. But wait, there's more -- I will post this in a new thread because it's a separate issue I need some feedback on, but looking at my sleepyhead data from last night, which was night 2 on my new equipment, I had 7 hours on the machine and had zero obstructive events, 1 hypopnia, and 16 central events. Doesn't this suggest I have primary CENTRAL sleep apnea rather than OSA?
Thanks for your post.

Hmm.
New user, nasal pillows.
Perhaps odd residue entered by way of an open mouth;
and the 'stringy' part was lint, bedding fiber, or a LEG!

No , if it was streached out over 7 hours. the only way to test for true centrals is thru a sleep test. If you roll over and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds it will show up as a clear airway or if you just hold your breath for that long for any reason it will show up as a CA. The machine can not tell if your awake or asleep. I have CA's on mine when I know I'm awake. I toss and turn a lot during the night and it's not unusual for me to have that many during the night.kaiasgram wrote:I had 7 hours on the machine and had zero obstructive events, 1 hypopnia, and 16 central events. Re: Help, blackish residue in mouth after first use
chunkyfrog, you made me think of something -- I was also using a new chinstrap, the chin holder part is black on the interior and darkish blue on the outside fabric. I just looked at it, it doesn't feel like very linty fabric, however, the chin cup could have made contact with my mouth, hence some blackish fuzz in my mouth. Well that's my story now and I'm stickin' to it! Thanks!
