Hi all,
New to the forum and I just received my cpap. I am tolerating it well and I am able to sleep right off but the dry mouth is killing me. I am using the humidifier at different levels but it really isn't helping, ant tips or tricks I can try? thanks in advance
How do you deal with dry mouth??
Re: How do you deal with dry mouth??
Dry mouth equals open mouth breathing (unless you have some other physical reason like maybe meds) even when using a full face mask. The humidifier sometimes just can't keep up. It does a good job with the nasal cavity but not so great with the larger oral cavity.
Biotene makes some mouth moisturizing products like mouthwash and gel. Might try it and also making sure that you drink adequate water during the day.
Some people even use a chin strap to limit mouth breathing when using a full face mask. Might not stop it completely but limits the open mouth so that the drying effects of the air entering the mouth is lessened.

I am also a heavy mouth breather. Without removing your mask, your mask (and mine) makes it impossible to have a sip of water during the night. During the night, I regenerate the saliva when I sense the dryness coming on. Besides keeping your mouth closed at night, there is not much of a remedy. I wish I had a better answer.

I think many people (like me) who use a FFM can't breathe well through their nose so keeping one's mouth closed is not an option for us. If adjusting the CPAP humidifier isn't enough then you might try using a hose cozy. It can help prevent condensation within the tube and thus leave more humidity in the air where you need it. You might also try using a room humidifier to increase the humidity in the room.
